I come to /. for nerdly talk, not "my religion is better than your religion" or "this war makes me feel [insert feeling]." Unless you've got a title implying technology related to the war, I'm not gonna even load the journal, it's just not what I came here for.

People, go to live-journal and post your inane "this is what I did today, and here's how I feel about non-technology related issue."

Yes, this war impacts many of us, yes we have feelings for that, yes taco would like more page load
    • Don't nerds have opinions on war?
      • Don't nerds have opinions on war?

Nerds have opinions about war (as seen by the growing numbers of /. JEs on the subject), go sign up for an LJ account and talk about it if you want to talk about war in general. When you want to talk about the technology of war, post it here.
        • Well you're certainly free to chose what you want to read. If your friends list is anything like mine, you can't read everything they all write. But I find it curious that you think people shouldn't write the things that you don't want to read.

          A few random thoughts:

          • Your expectations for a journal's contents does not match my working definition of a journal -- even a journal focused on a specific theme can touch on anything
          • Slashdot is supposedly a community -- a community by definition has discussions on i
    • I come to /. because I know that (and please try to stifle any giggles) I am going to get intelligent commentary from a community that is mostly either college educated, getting a college education, or just so damn smart they everybody THINKS they have a college degree any ways.

      Now compared to the talking heads on TV who likely couldn't figure out how to turn on their mic without "technical assistance";

I'll take /.'s commentary any day.
      • I have yet to see an original opinion on the coming war. Everything everyone has written so far is parroted from some talking head on the right or the left. Hence, the annoyance.
        • THE MARTIANS ARE ALL OUT TO GET US!!! GW Bush and Saddam are both Martian extremists working together to take over the earth by causing chaos and despair!!!!

Original? Yes. Stupid as hell? Yes.

Cut a cake in two, you got two halves of a cake, but still one whole cake. Don't complain that part of the cake is missing, like off the side of the knife and move on. :)

          • Actaully, it's not original. I speak as an avid and maybe slighlty Coo-coo Nuts Conspiracy Theorist and Historian. I have done research on this subject for the last 10 years and they are not Martians, they are Tools, Dupes, and/or Members of the Secret and Illuminated Master of the World. Oh, and They work for, against and with the Greys. Check out Conspiracy.Net for all sorts of fun theories regarding this and other topics.

But then I decided against it, probably for the same reasons you posted this :).

On one hand JE's are selfish ventures. They are journals in all senses so I can't agree with Heliocentric: JE's will probably be filled with useless information about our lives. But that's why there around right? They're a valid outlet for such things.

Of course then since this is a public forum you are well in your right to ignore them. I skip a lot of JEs for various reasons... mostly because I'm not interested in the topic. And I think that's the way it has been, is, and should be.

Damn it... this post sounds really damn condescending and arrogant. It wasn't meant to be this way...

Eh... let me just replace it all with "Do what you want to do." ;)
    • They are journals in all senses so I can't agree with Heliocentric: JE's will probably be filled with useless information about our lives.

My point is that there are regular online blog journals, and then there are ones on sites of special topics. Different subjects have sites with message boards and discussions in a theme: transportation [transportblog.com], cats [cat-tummy.com], cars [carblog.com], technology [slashdot.org], redheads [2girlsdesign.com], religion [gospelcom.net], food [kiplog.com], and there are even ones about war [ucla.edu]. Then there are sites for general blogging and discussions [livejournal.com]. I think you'll agree t
      • In truth I don't think there is an "ontopic" at /. I see it as a group of people... who happen to have IT as one of their interest. This specific interest is a good watermark for a lot of other interests: Monty Python, LOTR, Star Wars, Digital Rights, Video Games, Technophilia, Books, etc.

And a lot of those are marginally IT topics. I think /. is a site for "people like us" (no matter how untrue/unenforceable/general that statement is). So the emphasis is on the Community first, and the topic second (a
        • Oh, I definately put Monty Python, LOTR, Star Wars, Digital Rights, Video Games, Technophilia, Books, etc. as ontopic for /. I mean, we see those on the front page. I don't think I ever said IMHO journals should be IT, I said nerd, or geek.

And while I don't read about etw's fish, I do apreciate that he subjects his JEs in a way so others can tell what the topic is. In this regard I wish /. had both more topics AND (more importantly) that user selected topics showed up in bot the /. message contents AND
          • So what are you trying to say (since I do think we are agreeing more than not)? The point of your most recent reply seems to be "more informative titles so we can parse out stuff we don't want to read." Well that's fine.

But I originally thought you said "If it isn't nerd/IT, take it somewhere else."

And that I can't agree with since I see too many of our interests as being too intertwined with each other.

Let's take DaytonCIM's NFL draft JEs. Should you be able to ignore them? Yes. Would it be easier
