Scratch is fine until you hit that brick wall of 'how do I do X with this subset of a normal language/set of libraries', where X might be as simple as your kid saying 'I want to save the high score' or 'I want the player to have to guess a random letter' The solution to the high score problem, btw, is the cloud data block. Which is only enabled if you post a few hundred posts on the scratch forum. Try explaining that to an 8 year old.

Submission + - Toys R Us unveils Android Tablet "Tabeo" for Kids (cnet.com)

puddingebola writes: Can Toys R Us provide the iPad killer? It's a 7 inch Android tablet running ICS. At least they gave the kids a micro-SD card slot. From the article, "Powered by a 1GHz processor, the multitouch device comes with 4GB of built-in storage but can handle up to 32GB with a micro SDHC card. The device comes with 50 preloaded games, books, and educational apps and offers access to 6,000 more apps through the Tabeo Store."

I just bought an Iconia Tab A500 on Sunday from Target for $400, which came with a $100 Target gift card. This may still be available, and it meets your specs. The Iconia was apparently also on sale at Staples a couple of weeks ago for $300, but I missed it. So it's not too hard to get a decent ~$300 Android tablet if you look around.

Dave Perry Shows Off Cloud Gaming Service "Gaikai" 79

jasoncart writes "Veteran gaming man Dave Perry has shown off his OnLive-rivalling, cloud gaming service called Gaikai in a new video that is drawing a lot of attention. As you can see from the video, Perry plays World of Warcraft, EVE Online, Mario Kart 64, Spore and more — all running on a bog-standard computer through the Gaikai website, itself running in a normal version of Firefox." More details about the service are available at Perry's website. He spoke about Gaikai in an interview a few months ago, and he seems confident that this will work better than OnLive (which we've discussed in the past).

It isn't easy being the parent of a six-year-old. However, it's a pretty small price to pay for having somebody around the house who understands computers.
