Comment Re:How Sticky Will They Be? (Score 1) 41

My own subscription model is subscribe for a month or 2 especially if there is a "deal". Watch until I get caught up or the deal gives out then unsubscribe. I had disney+ early this year, binged thru some shows including The Mandalorian. Then cancelled. I just started subscribing again to watch the Mandalorian and when it is done airing new episodes I will let my subscription drop again. I do Netflix the same way. I currently have Epix and Showtime thru Prime Video only because they had a 2 months for 99 cents per month. I cancelled the auto-renew just past the 1 month mark so they'll both run out in early December. I haven't followed this same pattern with Hulu yet. Have been subscribed for several years but I don't think its very far off from being cancelled for a couple months. The only thing saving it so far is they do stream some of the network shows that I don't have an alternate subscription for...

I'm all for getting off of fossil fuels, but I always miss what is powering the grid at night when those solar panels go dark? Is there any large scale electrical storage in place right now to power the grid off hours? All the off the grid shows I see using solar for houses have battery banks for off hours. What does an entire grid do for off hours? Is it back to fossiil fuels, nuclear, and hydro during that time? If not whats the alternative?

Anybody used linux on a mainframe? I skimmed the comments but didn't see anyone mention they used one. I have it works but it has its issues...big issues. Anybody ever seen prices for memory on a mainframe. Big bucks. I'm sure its come down since then but in the last 2 years I heard them talking here at work about $10,000 for 1 Gb and it comes in 8 Gb "books". Then try to get your mind around z/VM RAM disks for swap (my z/Series guy says this is how you have to do it). Mainframe dasd (thats disk to the rest of us) is insanely expensive. Plus at least for us when you convert it in z/VM and present it to linux a mod27 (27 Gb mainframe volume) turns into a little over 23 Gb under LVM. Add that do all of the prepackaged executables you use have to be packaged for z/series hardware. Meaning ix/86 executables don't run on linux on Z the same way they won't run on linux on Power (p or i series)

I had this exact thing start happening earlier this week. I googled it and used the instructions to disable the Lenovo Message Center Plus. This is my work Laptop. I openned a ticket and tried to explain to them what it was but no they had to treat my like a newbie and scan my harddrive for malware (like I hadn't already thought of that), I know its SOP but I already told them what it was. The biggest reason for openning a Ticket was so they would know about it when somebody else here (all laptops are lenovo) gets the same thing.

Its convenient enough for me that it made Slashdot's front page so I can send this link to them.
