Do you really think the search queries of a tiny group of professionals while on a single website is going to make any difference at all?
Let's see...
Programmers as a fraction of professions in the world
x Windows Programmers as a fraction of Overall Programmers
x Users of MSDN as a fraction of Windows Programmers
x searches on MSDN as a fraction of their daily searches
= No boost at all to the market share of Bing

I agree with you on global warming, but that is because it requires a concerted effort from everyone, or the majority of people on the planet, to have an effect. However, the recolonising example you gave could feasibly be achieved privately, by a small (in terms of the earth) group of people. It would not need governments or nations to agree on a strategy or approach. A group with sufficient wealth and knowledge could just go ahead and do it themselves.
I just cannot see them accepting the loss of control of their data by moving to Google Wave.
I think you have missed one of the features of Google Wave, the protocol is a Federation Protocol. Which means it is not a cloud based system (although it can be, just as email can be), it is housed on your own servers just as email is.
One of the least interesting things you can do is to waste time forcing a machine to do something it's not designed for.
If everyone thought the same way as you do we wouldn't have XBMC, the best media centre software around. Hacking and Modding is all about using things for purposes they were not designed for and in doing so has brought about some really innovative stuff.
