POPE JOHN PAUL II IS STILL DEAD

Supprisingly I haven't seen much mention of this around the journal circle or even on the blogs I read.

Any clues as to who the Cardinals will pick as the new Pope?

(bonus points for those of you who get the reference in the headline)

  • I can't say that I get the reference, but I have a habit of doing that in the weeks following big-name deaths. Reagan's was really dragged out forever, and I would come into work every morning and say "Hey, have you heard? Reagan's still dead!"

I had a sound reinforcement job last night, so I wore my most appropriate shirt for such a solemn occasion. It's a Far Side looking cartoon rendition of the Abbey Road album cover. Except that it shows the now former Pope and two Beatles crossing the street. The capt

Well I don't want to give it away just yet so I will give you a big hint: "Generalissmo Francisco Franco"

    • I knew he was dead this morning, but I just checked again now that it's the afternoon, and he's STILL DEAD!
      • I was out all afternoon and evening, but upon returning home a little while ago, it seems that he's still dead.

Maybe someone should create a permanent thread somewhere so that we can keep each other apprised of his status. But I suppose the Stephen King trolls are probably already on top of that.

I read an article on this recently, and was quite surprised that several of the candidates are from South America (Aregentina, Columbia, Honduras, Brazil), as well as some from India and even one from Nigeria. I had always thought that the papal candidates generally came from Europe (which, admittedly, shows my utter lack of knowledge of the Catholic Church and its traditions).

If I recall correctly -- I was in Catholic school when John Paul I died -- every pope prior to John Paul II was Italian.

A Latin-American or African pope would rock the boat somewhat -- the White Jesus crowd would flock to Mel Gibson's sect. Cool as it sounds, I doubt it will happen.

      • Actually the Pope has only been an Italian for the last 460 years or so, prior to that there were non-Italian popes. In fact one of the prior Popes was a Borgia who were Spanish.

In any case the 'Pope should be Italian' crowd is thought to be one faction, another faction is the one pushing for a Pope from an area where the church is growing like Latin America or Africa.

The only thing anyone can say for sure is there is no clear front-runner at this point.
