Journal buffer-overflowed's Journal: WTF Moment of the Week and a Paranoia Update 15

your trashcan was a bitch and it got what it deserved
Somebody took my trashcan. I don't know why somebody would take a $5 rubber trashcan, but they did. It does not bother me apart from trying to understand WTF someone would take a trashcan.

I imagine someone was walking by, and my trashcan, as it was wont to do, began calling out insults. Terrible callous insults about the unknown party's mother. This person in a fit of rage took my trashcan and destroyed it. Hence the bolded text.

Anyway, the Paranoia Journal has been updated with all the parties who said they were interested as well as a time that is good for both me and GMHowell (Sometime around 21:30 GMT-5 (9:30PM EST) any day of the week, if you're too lazy to click). Let's try to work out a time, and get ourselves a GM.

Oh and WTF is up with the new comment history display?

Who decided to waste time on that?

Ugh, I can't remember when I posted what to what JE! Now I need to be patient, which means less page loads, which means I'll get mod points. Nooooooo!!!!!!

Update (11:00 PMish EST):
Apparently I was first to notice(well post about it anyway) the new comment display of suckiness.

Followed by:
arb in his JE .
heliocentric in his JE.

Also, something else has changed. Mozilla popped up telling me Slashdot tried to modify an existing cookie(when I was refreshing arb's JE to see if anyone had posted anything yet). Wonder why...

So, if it asks you and you haven't yet, why not save the old value and the new one and post em, just for shits and giggles.

  • That comment history page *does* suck. BIG time. I haven't done it before, but I think I may very well write an e-mail this time. That's HORRIBLE!!

    ....Bethanie....
    • And it's broken to boot. Look at the top and bottom.

      Bleck.

And it's not like there aren't TONS of other things that need fixing around here either.
    • Just to let you know - CmdrTaco's spam filter dumps mail from hotmail and yahoo accounts into his spam folder automagically - if you email him, your message may not get seen. If I could be bothered I'd toddle over to the bug page [sourceforge.net] on Sourceforge and submit a bug report...
      • I set her up with two mx aliases, so if she has an smtp server with her ISP she can just send email out with those reply-to addresses and it should go through fine and appear normally in her yahoo account.
    • In response to arb:
Here, I set you up two mx-aliases on my domain.

      (your slashdot nick)@netshade.org
      and (your slashdot nick)_slashdot@netshade.org

So, if you have a normal e-mail client you can send email and use either as a reply to address and it'll go right into your yahoo box.

If you want a normal pop3 mailbox, just gimme a reply, I'll set one up(the first email address I list and alias the second to both accounts) and email you the password.

Can't send mail through it(unless you have a static IP, in wh
      • Unfortunately Taco's filter will still toss the email if it comes from Hotmail or Yahoo. I had a Hotmail account with arb@ieee.org as my reply-to address (when I was an IEEE member - they have portable email addresses with virus scanners etc) but my email to him still got binned. Luckily for me he was scanning his spam folder and decided to look at my email.
        • Doh. I shoulda said that she should use her ISP's SMTP server to send the message. I thought I implied it by saying she should use a normal email client rather than a web-based one.

          You're totally right tho.
          • That's pretty much how my web-service provider handles email. It comes in via them, but you gotta send using your own ISP's SMTP server. Shoulda thought of that. 8-/ I thought you had meant using, say, Outlook Express and just setting the reply-to address for the Hotmail/Yahoo account.

BTW, the order of the comments is well and truly fscked! My latest comment appears somehwere in the middle of the page. This sucks dude! I rely on the comments lista lot more than I realised. 8-(
            • Well I could set up just about anyone an mx-alias or POP3 account. Only takes a few seconds. Incoming, I'm not worried about, it's outgoing.

Anyway, Yea, me too, especially considering the incredible slowness of the message system.

I know a few people are on, so I'm spam refreshing my comment history and my comments ARE NOT where they belong. It's completely counter intuitive and it sucks, badly.

I can create an unlimited number of email accounts through my web-provider, but they'd be incoming only - gotta find your own outgoing server. Not sure why they did it that way around...

I have it set up to email me when my friends post a JE or when someone replies to my posts

Why would I ever want NOT to have to scroll my goddamn browser sideways to see if anyone had replied to me? Can we just shoot someone? Any CSS wizards here want to suggest good ways to destroy their crappy coding?
  • your trashcan was a bitch and it got what it deserved

You aren't paranoid if they are really out to get you.

People of the world! Destroy your trashcans now before it's too late!!! On midnight, February 27, 2004, they plan to attack. If we don't act now, the Trashcans of Earth will destroy us all! As we speak, a secret terrorist group (known as "The Lid") is gathering. H0me1and S3cur1ty says thousands of bushels of spoiled broccoli are ready to use in their dirty bombs. Arm yourselves, your pets, and your

    • CSS can in theory do that, if you could upload a style sheet or use an alternate style sheet you could format the data however you wanted.
      • Yeah, CSS can change the appearance, but it can't sort items, archive messages, search, display posts in a nice collapsible threaded tree, and such things. The server has to do all that, and if anything is changed, the client has to go back out to the server and reload the entire page--a very slow process. It also depends how (or if) each website implements those functions.

Have you tried to use Slashdot's search function? It sucks bigtime. Not only is it limited and primitive, but it searches for the word

  • bravo. if there were a prize for JE openers, yours would win for sure.

the concept of the comments page doesn't blow, but the implementation sure does.
