Comment Step too far (Score 4, Interesting) 30

I agree with EU on the anti-competitive nature of the Apple AppStore, but this is a step too far. If they want to force Apple to open up AirPlay & AirDrop, then Microsoft should be forced to open up NTFS, SMB, DirectoryAuth and all the various tech they use to keep people locked into their ecosystem. Google should also be similarly forced to open up the Gmail API and not restrict features like “Snooze” to their own apps.

Comment Employer of last resort (Score 4, Interesting) 154

In Indian IT Engineering colleges, Infosys is seen as the employer of last resort. They will hire any of the graduates that apply, as they don't pay well, have long hours, managers play weird carrot & stick games with employees, which leads to this slave like culture. As a result, they don't really get the top talent, but instead are left with desperate bottom tier graduates. Anyone even remotely talented, ends up leaving in as soon as they can.

Even amongst the Indian IT outsourcing industry, they do not have a very good reputation and in the latest rankings by CIO.com, they were 7th out of 10. They are even behind companies that started after them, originated abroad, had little understanding of the local landscape and faced insurmountable challenges in getting a foothold in India.

Comment Fix media licensing (Score 2) 109

I think, we should try and fix the minefield of digital media licensing, rather than trying to hold on to physical media. One idea that could potentially work, would be to make licensing of media legally mean the same thing as buying a physical copy.

Well yeah. It only takes like 30 minutes to actually push out a code change.

But to figure what needs to be changed, where and the best way to achieve it, can take a lot of digging & experience.

Itâ(TM)s like that old joke with the machine repair man.

A repairman was hired to repair a large machine in a factory. He showed up, examined the machine, then tapped it once with a hammer. It started up. The factory owner was pleased, but not when he got a bill from the repairman for $10000. He thought that was outrageous, and he asked for an itemized bill. So the repairman handed him a bill which said:

Tapping machine with hammer: $1

Knowing where to tap: $9999

Comment It’ll take time (Score 2) 63

I think people are underestimating how long the iPhone really took to make. I was recently watching General Magic, and it shows that such a device was being envisioned back in the 80s. The interfaces they were working on back then, look remarkably similar to what the iPhone looks like. Particularly the OG iPhone 2G. From the Newtons to the Palm Pilots to Windows Mobile, it took a lot of iterations to make a good product.

Maybe in the next couple of decades, we will have the next iPhone.
