This is one problem with locking down the OS. With enough motivation, hackers are able to find ways to get around the security to access the deep system layers. However, users and legitimate apps are locked out and must rely on the OS provided APIs and tools.
This creates an imbalance in the security of the OS. A power user can't launch a root terminal and just take a look at what's going on. They are bound by the OS level sandbox, and can only access so much of the system. Which also means that any user level security solutions are mostly useless, and one must rely on the OS to keep attackers out
In some ways a PC is more secure, than these so called "hardened devices"
