It will strike everyone as very puzzling. After all, everyone on slashdot and Ars Technica knows that wind and solar are far cheaper than nuclear and just as reliable. So why on earth is Google looking into nukes? Why do they not just build a huge wind farm, throw in a few batteries, and get unlimited cheap power?

Because the wind and the sun are free, after all. But instead they seem to be resorting to a ridiculously expensive nuke, and then on top of that, where you have to pay for the fuel, I mean, someone has to dig the stuff up and refine it. Whereas the wind just blows and the sun just shines, so they obviously are cheaper.

They have accountants and lots of MBAa, so they must see this, so the question is why they are going against what their analyses must show them. If it was coal or gas we would know, they were in thrall to the fossil fuel industry. But is there a nuke lobby, and are they not bigger than it anyway.

You put ALL of your data on one cloud provider with no local backup? Loosing that data is YOUR fault. I It always sounds like a lot of money to the bean counters until you explain to them the station probably spent tens of millions of dollars producing that content, and all it takes is a corporate meltdown or technical SNAFU and all of it is gone.

Let's ignore for now the obvious issue of how you solve a problem with an app that requires the very device you have a problem with. How do they expect people to become new customers in the first place? The #1 reason I go to a cell provider's physical stores is to pick out a new phone, have it activated, and my current phone (if still functional) cloned to it. Are they seriously expecting 100% of new customers to be BYOD Verizon defectors? I have to suspect this is the "anchoring" opening bid in trying to sneak through a far less obnoxious change, hoping we'll all thank them rather than reaching for the tar and feathers when they announce whatever real change they're aiming for.

Licenses have ALWAYS been revocable. Physical distribution doesn't change that. Historically, until relatively recently, they have lacked the technological means to enforce license revocation.

Contractors tend to be a lot cheaper and easier to get in big cities. In small to medium cities there is a shortage. You wait for a month and even then they may not show up. They know they have you over a barrel so they overcharge.

I don't want to sound alarmist and I am obviously not an expert but... we know what happens when you remove a species from the food chain. 1. Their predators die off. 2. Other species rise to take their place. While obviously mosquitos are the most harmful-to-humans animals on the planet, have the scientists really figured out what the potential adverse long-term effects of permanent mosquito reduction will be, or are we rushing headlong into solving one problem just to create a worse one further down the line?

There is an ongoing war that is crippling economies worldwide specifically to prevent one nation from getting one nuclear weapon. There is another war where the mere threat of using nuclear weapons has caused the entire Western World from properly protecting an ally against stealing land and heinous war crimes in the act of doing so.

That is not 'controlled', my friend. That is teetering on the edge of disaster.

Most likely, and this is a bit cynical, the people that own or control Cloudera are foreign born and are trying to help their own ethnic group at the exclusion of Americans.

Do you not notice 10 PETABYTES of data transmitting out of your data center? This was either a slow transfer over a REALLY long time, or they pegged the network to download it all really quickly.
