Comment Why? (Score 5, Informative) 210

So one person reports (unconfirmed) two bull sharks in flood waters. Local media the next day generally has the opinion the story is a load of bollocks and now almost a week later it appears on Slashdot (a news for nerds site) as fact.... OK.

If you want some (slightly) more nerdy stuff to report about the floods go research the Wivenhoe dam.

I've really got to stop reading idle stories.

Comment Age Discrimination is Reality in IT (Score 2, Insightful) 543

This case is not cut and dried (the guy was already over 50 when he was hired), which is unfortunate because age discrimination is very, very real in IT and especially in the software industry.

If you in IT, and are at age 40, and have not been promoted to management, become an independent contractor, started your own business, taken a government job, or switched careers... well, you better look good in blue, because you are one pay check away from having no other choice but to become a Wal*Mart greeter.

I know we're getting trolled, but it's too important an issue to ignore.

In an ideal world, we would tackle the problem properly by decoupling health insurance from employment. Linking health care to employment was the worst mistake ever made in health care in America. There are probably too many powerful lobbyist in Washington to hope for that to ever change. So we're left with imperfect alternatives. Such is politics, such is life.

And yes, this is an imperfect bill, but it's a first step towards badly needed reform. Is going to hurt? There's no way health care reform can NOT hurt some interests, while helping others. That's why leadership - political or otherwise - is supposed to take courage. Too bad we don't get that from our leaders.

MediaDefender Buys MediaSentry For $136,000 (Not $20M) 141

newtley writes "SafeNet paid $20 million for MediaSentry in 2005, but has just sold it to rival MediaDefender for a paltry $136,000, with a promise of more later. MediaSentry's new owner says the combination will allow it to 'dramatically expand its effectiveness.' Is it time for an official government inquiry into MediaSentry and the RIAA? A Chicago student said she was planning on killing herself because the RIAA promised her she'd land in court unless she paid almost $10,000 to 'settle' an alleged copyright infringement. She 'couldn't sleep, couldn't study, couldn't live a normal life because of the worry.' The RIAA 'evidence' came from MediaSentry, accused of operating illegally."

One would presume that if Adobe ported Photoshop to linux it would have the same UI in terms of functionality as compared to the Mac and Win32 versions (which are the same apart from minor aesthetics). The same should apply to Linux - it's minor aesthetics only that make it different to the Win/Mac versions.

The UI in GIMP is crap because it isn't as user-friendly in a functional sense as Photoshop.

Well that and The GIMP is missing a lot of very important features that are found in PS.

As it stands, for me Photoshop is the last application that is really holding me back from fully switching to linux. The sooner Adobe port it over, the better :-)
