Too Good To Ignore — 6 Alternative Browsers 291

bsk_cw writes "With the exception of Google's Chrome (which got attention because it was, after all, Google), most of the alternative browsers out there tend to get lost in the shuffle. Computerworld asked three of their writers to take some lesser-known browsers out for a spin and see how they do. They looked at six candidates: Camino (for the Mac), Maxthon (for the PC), OmniWeb (for the Mac), Opera (both the Mac and the PC versions) and Shiira (for the Mac)." It would have been more interesting if they included some popular open source, Linux-friendly browsers like Konqueror or Epiphany, as well.

Couple Funds Honeymoon With Recyclables 38

John and Ann Till, from Petersfield, in Hampshire, spent three months collecting recyclables to pay for their honeymoon flights. The couple earned one reward point, which they converted into BA air miles, for every four items they recycled. In the end, they amassed 36,000 miles. Mr Till, 31, a railways communications manager, said, "We wanted to make our honeymoon special and were trying to think of ways to raise money for it. I saw on the machine that you got a Tesco Clubcard point for every four items you put in. For every 250 points you got 600 British Airways miles. We worked out that it would be possible to turn rubbish into our flights — as long as we had enough."

Feed Engadget: TomTom patent reveals camera-based GPS unit (engadget.com)

We're not entirely sure what TomTom has up its sleeve here, but the European Patent Office has peeled back a few details on one of the company's endeavors, revealing a patent application that describes a GPS unit bolstered by live video feeds. As you can see, the system would superimpose directions on top of actual images of your surroundings, which could go a long way to preventing some of the GPS-related incidents we've seen over the years. From the looks of it, however, the system would only make use of a camera in your own vehicle, not ones sprawled across the countryside, reducing the potential benefits somewhat but likely making it much closer to reality.

Submission + - iPhone OS X hacked in three days

unPlugged-2.0 writes: "An australian developer blog writes of a short story on how the Iphone root password was cracked for the new operation system on the IPhone. The story outlines the procedure but doesn't give the actual password. According to the story:

"The information came from an an official Apple iPhone restore image . The archive contains two .dmg disk images: a password encrypted system image and an unencrypted user image. By delving into the unencrypted image inquisitive hackers were able to discover that all iPhones ship with predefined passwords to the accounts 'mobile' and 'root', the last of which being the name of the privileged administration account on UNIX based systems."

However the article does say that now that hackers have the root password they are not sure what can exactly be done with it if anything at all. I am sure at some point though they should be able to get to the firmware and be able to perhaps put their own firmware. Could this be the start of putting linux on the iphone? Then all we would need are drivers for the touch interface and accelerometers."
