Comment Led lighting sucks (Score 4, Interesting) 78

It is completely useless. I bought a box recently it has 6 fans with lighting that I shut off and lights on the ram I couldn't see how. As for Windows profitability, they'd have a lot fewer sales if it wasn't on all the prefabs. It is cheaper and easier to buy a prefab with windows than to buy the parts and put them together without. My box cam with win11 and I booted it exactly once by mistake before I wiped it an put Linux on it. Can I get the MS tax back? not on your life. Oh and the NVIDIA card has an led branding, I guess its an Aero that I can't turn off either.

Oh well, I guess there is a cost for expediency.
What the use is a light on my mouse that gets covered by my hand? At least I finally twigged on how to turn it off permanently using CKB-Next, except it comes back on with the box is off. How stupid is that?

Thank you for this confirmation of what I was thinking. I mostly don't use that box, it is like third on the chain on my desk behind this new one using the same OS and a mac mini I use to do my taxes all attached to the same monitor.
BTRFS seems a bit more finicky as to how you attach extra drives to it, but I can't say I have explored the available information accessible from the net. I've used LINUX for quite some time going back to Mandrake but was never particularly an elite user.

Anyways, not particularly germane to the article.

now, if I was more familiar with pacman (is it?) I could probably roll it back but maybe first I shou;d turn off the quick boot in the bios so I can select a different line in grub or turn off auto login. or something. I'm not sure how worthwhile it is to salvage an old box when age is diminishing my brain power. I can just slap the drive back into the new box and take advantage of the extra terabyte. I misspoke earlier it is my win1o era box, I already trashed the win7 one.

The first thing I did on this new box was trash the win11 it came with and never looked back.

Now if only I has paid more attention when installing this box I would have insisted on ext4 instead of whatever newfangled file system it installed (btrfs) and my old knowledge wouldn't be obsolete.

I wonder if it was a problem with the proprietary NVIDIA drivers.... It is too hot out lately I need to find a glacial runoff to dunk my head in. I mean good luck finding a glacier around here, right?

I mistakenly applied it to my win7 era Manjaro box and was left with an unresponsive black screen, I can login to a terminal CTL-ALT-F2, etc but I don't know how to fix it. I guess I shouldn't put it into my new box and let it try to adjust to it before I put it back in the old box and let it go back to its old configuration, I probably corrupted the install. I can't imaging what possessed me to try the release candidate when the 6 level linux was a safe option and the stable 7 level was also available.

I think it is a wayland problem but my command line is rusty.

What other concessions has Mozilla had to make to stay afloat, I'm sure default search engine isn't the only revenue stream, What else do you suppose corporate donors expect for their money? I find the user experience is degrading over time. Perhaps I'm just getting old.

That is funny. I started using windows with 3.1 and had problems with software in every version since. Good luck with that.

By the way I was saying my computer was underpowered not that there was anything particularly wrong with steam on linux. I'm not sure why anyone would want to use SteamOS on anything other than a repurposed handheld. Steam does have usability issues and it led the way in intrusive functionality in the gaming world where you don't own your games and someone is always trying to look over your shoulder but I guess that is just what we have to live with now.

In a way the AI companies driving up equipment costs is all part of the scheme to get everything into the cloud where they can keep an eye on you if people can't afford more than a dumb terminal then they will get to watch every click you make as it is transfered to their server.
