Journal bluefairee's Journal: clarification 31

For a newbie, I sure do a great job of picking the hot topics around here. I'm sure the wave I've created is at least double what i've seen. To be honest, I think it's kinda cool (hee hee).

I do, however, want to make sure we are all clear on WHY I posted the JE.

1)I was having an 'I wonder' moment. I just happened to wonder out loud.

2)I don't understand the whole karma thing. How to get it. What do to with it once I get it (and I WILL get it(-; ) Why I will get it. What is a mod ect. ect. ect.

3)I was having a great time commenting in other JEs, but so many had 5's and 4's and even some 3's. Frankly I was a little put out. Seeing that constant 1 next to my comments was starting to irk me.

Now, I'm not usually one to complain, BUT I must say I do not like getting 1's in ANYTHING. Unless, 1 represents the best (^: I am a perfectionist (unless it's spelling or grammer OR punctuation...these things never made sense to me and still don't), I'm extremly opinionated (usually I keep this to myself), I'm inquisitive, I'm creative, I have the humor of an 8yr old boy, I'm independant (and damned proud of it), and I sure as hell do NOT like OR want hand-me-outs. Just in case anyone was wondering :^p

Now, back to the whole karma thing. I expect to earn excellent karma. Yes, I said EARN. I only cherish things i've worked for and earned. If I don't earn your respect then I don't want it. Like wise, if you don't earn mine, I won't give it. I am looking for friends. People I can share with, learn from, help, and BS with. Not everyone will like me. That is fair since I know I won't and don't like everyone.

If you like me, then stay and comment. If you like me and don't comment stay anyways. If you don't like me stay and comment or go somewhere else. I will warn those who choose to post rude, demeaning, or just plain mean spirited comments. I have NO tolerance for it. This is a free world and you can do and say what you want. Be prepared to have the wrath of the fairee fall on you. Those who know me in RL don't piss me off for a good reason. My own mother, whom I was terrifed of till just a few years back, won't even go there. I hope I have made myself clear. To my knowlege I've not met any trolls. If I do, stay out of my way!

For the rest of you, I say thank you from the bottom of my big fairee heart. I most certainly wasn't expecting such a welcome. At this point in my life it is just what the doctor ordered. Everyones suggestions and comments have been helpful and insightful. You all have given me a much better idea of what i've gotten myself into(^;

BTW, I'm all about the feedback! ALL about the feedback. Did I mention how much I REALLY want feedback? I have learned how to make paragraphes (you're welcom Sol...it was all for you baby). I'm still working out the rest of the HTML stuff. Heliocentric, this post is for you...the CAPS that is(^: Bethanie, I believe I read something about you being big on grammer, sp. ect. I could be wrong. Even if I am the open dictionary by my keyboard is for you(^;

I'm not an ass kisser and never will be, but I am considerate where I believe consideration is due.

So, all that being said, any questions?

Good. Who wants icecream? Dayton, I don't eat pie, but for you I will(^; It's gotta be chocolate! Anyone familiar with brownie obsession form TGIF? It's better then sex baby! Just picture the herbal essecne chick eating it or that seen in the restaraunt from When Harry met Sally.

In the great realm of /., the karma system has two major players - you and moderators. It starts when you post a comment. The comment is entered into the system with a score of 1 (or 0 if you're not logged in). At random, people with high karma are selected as moderators. They are given five tokens that they can spend to adjust the score of a p
  • I really enjoy studying grammar, and I try really hard to make sure that my spelling is correct -- I read every post at *least* once through to check for clarity and typos -- and *frequently* consult the Big Book o' Words when posting here.

But I don't hold anyone else to the same standards. Who was it... rdewald? who said that spelling is not an indicator of intelligence. In my experience, I have found that to be true. Tightness of various sphincter muscles, perhaps -- but intelligence? Nope.

    So you just
  • ...I "friended" you because, in fact, I despise everything you write. I use my Friends list to monitor the writings of my worst enemies, so that once I achieve my aim of becoming Supreme Glorious Swaggering Dictator of the Multiverse Known and Unknown, I may quote your JEs in your show trials as evidence against you.

You should feel honored, for you are in good company.

Yes, Doctor, I was late giving Ethelred the medication today.

    Cheers,

    • However- i have i given you a title yet? I'll have to promote you because of that email. *grin*

      sol

ps i'm also due to post a JE listing everyone thus far. i think there will be a possibility for people to cheat their way onto the list. BF, you're getting points of favour for listing me in a JE- that's a flattery point. I've a JE about my points of favour system. Also, i'm a stickler for grammar. I won't mark you down for it, but i certainly notice when people craft fine prose. Bethanie has excellent gram

      • Another statuette!! Did I get the marmoset yet? No? Another aardvark? OK. That makes two aardvarks, an armadillo, and a coati.

        Kiddo *loves* these!! Thanks!

    • Woo Hoo! My first nemesis! This fairy is movin' up in the world. YEESSS!
  • I had no idea what this karma stuff was for the longest time. I didn't pay attention to it, nor cared anything about it. In fact, I had gotten to "excellent" and didn't even know it. I used to post pretty consistently on the front page, and earned a few "insightfuls" and "interesting" and the odd "funny" but was still posting at 1... hell I had no idea what in the hell the number meant in the first place.

It wasn't till about this past March or April (after being a regular /. user for about 2 years) that I
  • I love Slashdot's HTML system. All the tags you need to properly format your text, but none of the annoying ones (images, colors, sizes, embedding, etc.). It keeps the discussions down to just words, rather than flashiness, which is how discussions should be. I wish e-mail and usenet used just these tags and ignored all other HTML.
    • Well, agreed... However there are some drawbacks: ECODE doesn't cut it for code. Also, if you want to write something in another language you can't use accentuation (or foreign currencies). Not even the propper way with HTML-entities.

I don't know why the above are banned: I don't see how one could abuse it.

      • What's the difference between ECODE, CODE, and PRE? The only difference I can think of would be for distinguishing between different types of preformatted text when using CSS to display them differently.
        • I don't exactly know. You need to ask a webdesigner, not me. ECODE would work fine if they didn't add random spaces in the lines. I know this is against page-widening, but they could limit to a 80char width or so.

Besides, if you want different displays with CSS, just use different classes, and you're okay.

  • Everyones suggestions and comments have been helpful and insightful.

That should be (+1)Insightful. Helpful doesn't necessarily get you anything.

You should go here [slashdot.org] and read the FAQ to get a better idea of how this place works. That's kinda like a nice way to say "RTFM".

    • RTFM...hm that's funny. The last manual I read was for my camera. I just read it resently. I've had the camera for 4 years. Bluefairee. Manual. Bluefairee doesn't read ma ma ma. Yep. It's just as I suspected. Those two won't actually go in the same sentance.
  • IESpell [iespell.com] is one tool than can help you out. It can check the text boxes on a form with one click, IIRC, so it should work well for /. forms.
    • Got that installed right now. As the poster child for spell checking, I highly support it.

If you're a Mac user with Safari, you can accomplish the same thing by control clicking in a text field. The spelling service appears at the bottom of the pop up menu.
  • You expect to earn excellent karma.

I award you one point of favour for wanting good karma, one for being willing to earn it, and yet another for the fact that you're immediate and upfront about the fact that you want to be popular NOW.

    These are all positive points.

Modding is moderating, and you need to post a bit and be around a bit first. There's a time delay, the pool of eligible moderators (You have to check the box saying you're willing to moderate) doesn't include the last certain percentage of m

    • Sometimes, your post will run afoul of one of the automated checkers that Slashdot uses to monitor posts for poor content. No problem, you think, I will simply hit the "back" button and fix the post. Not so. The text is gone. To avoid having to retype, I frequently use notepad (in Windows) to compose my posts. Metapad is another nice little text editor. Big posts that are fairly repetitive, like the JobCenter journal entries, I maintain in text files and modify as required.
      • No problem, you think, I will simply hit the "back" button and fix the post. Not so. The text is gone.

That depends on the browser and quite possibly your browser settings. I use FireBird and when I use the back arrow, I still see my text. Also, most of the lameness filters present you with your comment in a textarea where you can simply re-edit it.

The one spot where you don't get an editable version of your comment is the Slow Down Cowboy warnings, and you can simply refresh those pages to resubmit your
      • arb's right -- I had *major* problems with that using IE -- but once I switched over to Mozilla, there was no problem at all. And now I'm using Firebird, and it's even nicer, 'cause it loads faster than Mozilla.

But all of these tips & tricks are things that you will probably have to come back to once you have actually experienced the problem a time or two. Nothing like actually *living* it to teach you a valuable lesson! :-)

    • BY the way- set your preferences so that in comments, you can see the domains of links.

I think it's better to set your preferences in your browser. The status bar is there for a reason, and just seeing the domain isn't enough. Some slashtrolls have figured out how to redirect from yahoo. I generally look at a url before I click, even on "reputable" sites. You never know where you may end up.

Oh, and bluefairee, if you ever see goatse.cx in a url, NEVER CLICK IT. You will be throwing up for days, clawing

      • that was the one that i got scorched by, and it was at another URL, too. Truly unfair. So ALWAYS be careful what you click.
        • eh, I didn't really think it was so bad, but I had googled "goatse" and found some pretty accurate text descriptions of it, so I knew what to expect.

As long as you realize that there is some *really* sick sh*t out there on the net, and that some weirdos get their jollies by showing it off to other people, then you'll be well-armed... Unless you're sensitive like our dear sweet sol -- and would be easily scarred... in that case, be *very* careful!!

As for me, I've got the skin of a rhino went it comes to st

The reason you are seeing that is because of the addtional modifier given to friends, and friend of a friend(FoaF)

Its all here [slashdot.org] under people modifiers. They are cummulative.

You don't see your bonuses for your own stuff, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world see your posts.
  • Drop the caps - stick with your own style and don't be dictated to by the Capitalisation Nazis. I qute like your posts and the all lowercase thang works. The Capstapo can learn to live with your idiosyncratic style.
    • I have no trouble understanding her either. And really, not even the "editors" follow the rules of spalling and gramer. So, screw it, only the first and last letters matter anyway.

Post what you want BlueFairee. I'll read it. If you really care about karma, then you may want to worry about it, but only on the main page.
    • me three! of course, i usually don't use CAPS, except for acronyms. then again, i don't get many replies.

it's wierd. when i started with email and the internet, it seemed a lack of caps was the norm. i'm not sure why i do it still.
  • How to attain it: Post interesting things. Period. If you really have something to say, it can get modded up even if it's the 400th post in the thread. If you can't come up with anything meaningful yourself, post a link to something interesting (better do this early). Also, you can always try to be witty and post a funny joke -- you don't get karma for being modded funny, but someone might have mercy on you (and a clue) and give you an "Underrated".

What to do with it: It's a game. There's no public scoreke
