Journal blinder's Journal: Loosen the Grip 10

Okay I just had to post this. Some of these slashdot geeks need to loosen up... a lot. Its almost getting to the point where a lot of these knuckleheads are starting to sound a little pathological.

Take for instance, this post regarding the Bill Gates interview. This person (if they were being serious) actually compared Bill Gates and his actions (his supposed actions done to this person) to that of an abusive spouse.

What in the FSoF is that all about?

Why do a lot of these geeks take EVERYTHING so personally? Its disturbing... can you imagine living your life filled with so much hate and anger thinking that what Microsoft does is a personal attack against you?!?! Holy shit, what a horrible life!

Maybe its time to put the computer away and seek professional help, because there is a serious problem here if that is the consistent pattern of behavior for some of these folks. Its almost sad.

Its the same with the Star Wars flamewars surrounding the prequals. Hearing these morons say things like "George Lucas raped my childhood" (first, that means *nothing* just sounds extreme) but to actually say such a thing, to invoke the word "rape" when talking about a MOVIE is pathetic and sad, and should this person ever be a victim of rape, maybe then they will understand how wrong and misguided they were in their commentary.

So I ask the question again, why so many of these slashdot geeks take things so personal? Is it a manifestation of the intense insecurity many geeks feel, and the "lashing out" is just a defense mechanism? Sort of like compensating for personal failings?

Oh well, nothing I say will change anything or matter worth a damn, but it just had to be put into print for my own sense of releasing this frustration I have with so many on this site.

  • I think it was, like, a joke.
Patterned after the famous "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me" saying.

    Oh, BTW, fp!
    • heh... are you sure? how can you be really sure?

i've seen how some of these people think, and its often *not* a joke, which is what motivated this JE.

It is because they are TRUE geeks. The ones who really did get beat up every day in school because they are snotty little self absorbed brats. Tomorrow they will be a day older, unless they decide to "explain" how stupid the bikers at the local bar are for not using electric choppers.
  • But it's usually from anti-Bush zealots.
  • reminded me of a comment I read on slashdot a while ago.

"I swear to God that Microsoft could release a cure for cancer and someone on Slashdot would would recommend that terminally ill cancer patients wait for an open-source alternative."

    I googled for the source..(source [216.239.41.104]).

  • ... from assuming that many of them are 13 year old geeks. I remember thinking, even ages ago when I was 13, that 13 year olds were, by and large fucktards. When you combine the natural fuctardedness of that age group with the feedback they get from gathering in such a large virtual group, you have a recipe for hyperbole run rampant.

The ranting and raving is reinforced by the easy mod points to be gained from engaging in it.

  • I'm with Red...it was a joke. But the poster makes a valid point. Microsoft hasn't been about interoperability -- ever, except to when they have to. Look at the OASIS file format for interop among office suites. OOo and Koffice are both supporting or planning to support this format, and I believe Corel will be following suit as well. Do you think that for one second Microsoft has any plans to support this?

I mean, sure Microsoft supports open standards to connect to the Internet. But that's because th
    • Okay fine, I can see your point... but I think my point is equally valid in that... to take things MS does as PERSONAL as a lot of these kids do is patently ridiculous... and is an indication of a serious inbalance. I mean, can no one see that thinking one is being abused because MS doesn't redistribute and XML specification a little... um... stupid?

I'm not arguing the validity of the technical issue of what MS does, yeah, I *know* what they do, and do not like it (which is why I am typing this on a Mac Po
      • One should not take these things, or anything dealing with technology personally. Because ultimately, heh, like an abusive relationship, you can leave and never look back.

Well, exactly. Microsoft doesn't do this out of a hatred for you, the end user. They LOVE you. They LOVE your money. They do it to make more money. Businesses aren't in business to control your life, make your life miserable, or to do ANYTHING except make money. That's it. That's the purpose of a business.

        I don't take it personal
