Downadup Worm — When Will the Next Shoe Drop? 295

alphadogg writes "The Downadup worm — also called Conflicker — has now infected an estimated 10 million PCs worldwide, and security experts say they expect to see a dangerous second-stage payload dropped soon. 'It has the potential to infect about 30% of Windows systems online, a potential 300 to 350 million PCs,' says Don Jackson, director of threat intelligence in the counter threat unit at SecureWorks. The worm, first identified in November and suspected to have originated in the Ukraine, is quickly ramping up, and while Downadup today is not malicious in the sense of destroying files — its main trick is to block users from accessing antivirus sites to obtain updates to protect against it — the worm is capable of downloading second-stage code for darker purposes."

Is it possible to have friends that do not need to know everything in my life that will fit in a twit?

Sure it is. It's also possible to have friends who enjoy keeping up with what you're doing, and vice versa, I was in the Navy for 5 years and so I have a few close friends that happened to be scattered around, and not always accessible via phone.

I personally can call, E-Mail and text any person in my circle of friends that I think needs it.

Yes, or you can do ONE status update that all your friends can read and respond to.

Mostly though people do not need 37 updates on my day.

Yes because the only to Twitter is do 37 updates though out the day.

That kind of thing is not really about what my friends need to know about me but more likely my need to announce my life to everyone I know in order to feel important.

Umm... it's most fun read your friends twits rather then you're own, so it's nice to reciprocate.

I suppose if you don't have any friends that like to keep up with what's going on in your life and vice versa.

That's what conversations are for. You know, real physical human interaction. Remember that?

Just so I have this straight, phone conversations are real physical human interactions? Are text messages? And how is reading another's twitter feed, and responding to, different then a phone conversation? Twitter isn't meant to replace physical meetings or hanging out with friends, it's for seeing what people are up without having to directly interfere with what they're currently doing. At least until we master the whole being everywhere at once thing. Then Twitter will become outdated.

LHC Forces Bookmaker To Lower Odds On the Existence of God 457

A UK bookmaker has lowered the odds on proving that god exists to just 4-1 to coincide with the switching on of the Large Hadron Collider. The chance that physicists might discover the elusive sub-atomic object called the "God particle" has forced the odds lower. Initially the odds that proof would be found of God's existence were 20-1, and they lengthened to 33-1 when the multi-billion pound atom smasher was shut down temporarily because of a magnetic failure. A spokesman for Paddy Power said, "The atheists' planned advertising campaign seems to have renewed the debate in pubs and around office water-coolers as to whether there is a God and we've seen some of that being transferred into bets. However we advise anyone still not sure of God's existence to maybe hedge their bets for now, just in case." He added that confirmation of God's existence would have to be verified by scientists and given by an independent authority before any payouts were made. Everyone getting a payout is encouraged to tithe at least ten percent.
