Journal bethanie's Journal: [Ask SlashGeeks] Touchpad is hosed 12

So maybe some of you uber special geeks can give me an idea of what the fuck is going wrong with the touchpad on my laptop now.

All of a sudden, it's not as responsive as it's supposed to be. It'll work OK, and then hang up for one to three seconds or so. And to wake it up again, I have to move it either to the left or up or down -- can't go directly to the right from its narcoleptic state.

And seeing as how the arrow keys on the keyboard STILL aren't responding, it makes navigating around the screen a REAL pain in the patootie.

I have done some Google searching about "touchpad troubleshooting" (found nothing helpful) and I cleaned it with a LIGHTLY alcohol-dampened cotton ball. Still no improvement.

So, anyone have any ideas? There was nothing new or unusual that happened to *cause* this; it just started out of the blue this afternoon.

I'd appreciate any suggestions y'all have to offer.

[Ask SlashGeeks] Touchpad is hosed

  • It could be a hardware or software issue. But I'd bet on hardware.

I'm guessing that the touchpad's problem stems from faulty wiring. You don't have to go far to suspect the same of the keyboard.

Unless they merely "refurbished" the first laptop you sent for repairs, I'm guessing you wound up with a lemon somehow. (Whatever happened to that first one, anyway?)
    • Guess I should have specified that this is the PC I'm talking about here. The MacBook just got picked up today for its trip back to Memphis -- I *might* have it back by this time next week.

The arrow keys on this keyboard got fubared when Squirt puked on the laptop in the middle of the night one night -- that's been an issue for a couple of weeks.

The touchpad (BTW, they call it a "trackpad" when it's an Apple -- and there are TONS of problems with those, too, judging from the hits I got on Google) is a b

If the touchpad is part of keyboard, I would expect that it shares the same issue as the arrow keys - some circuit somewhere got fried. (then after some time passed, another circuit, this one impacting the proper function of the trackpad...) Time to spurge on a new keyboard. You MIG

Not the right combination of phrases...
      • Why don't you just hook up a USB mouse?
  • Your laptop related journal entries over the last few months are, without a doubt, a walking Windows advertisement. That or proof that will get you into the unluckiest woman alive category.
    • This one IS about the Windows box.

And really, it's not as big of an issue as an "unluckiest woman alive." I mean, it's just a machine. It's not THAT big a deal.

  • assuming you're not talking about a keyboard for a tower that has a built in touchpad, i might have a theory.

batteries used in both macs and pcs have been getting recalled recently.
