Google overplaying their hands with power users will mean that, finally, enough people will have had enough of Android - as people said, what's the point of Android if you can't install the software you want?

I expect that if the Courts were to step in and help enforce copyright, the US Gov't would make sure that the AI companies can continue to take everything for free (or nearly free), otherwise the US "would lose the AI war to China". IMHO this is an example of an industry "too big to fail"

I am not sure about the "gesture of goodwill" thing. they probably just thought they could lose a suit and set a bad (for them) precedent.

from the "browser wars" onwards... the US have preferred having "tech champions" ruling the waves around the world to any effective anti-monopoly action. a choice was made in decades past to block the monopoly of standard oil and co. However the distributed and international nature of the internet makes monopoly busting far harder and the US does not have the discipline to do this. now the US is living with the consequences of these choices. we are all behold to trillion-dollar companies which own and control the "data" of the whole population, in the US and everywhere else. these companies have an almost unlimited financial and political clout, a fact that is starting to tear apart the whole edifice of the country. good luck to you if you want to rein them in now. any attempts to stop their collection of our data will be met by an impenetrable wall of dollars influencing the political process, which will derail the attempt.
