Journal bellus quies's Journal: Sweetener of choice? 13

Oh the big decisions in life: Equal or Sugar?
I've heard so many mixed stories from people, why not to have artificial sweeteners, why it doesn't matter, why you shouldn't put anything in it...

So What do you use, oh slash-dotted masses? Ok so the masses don't read my blog, how about: So what do you use, oh handfull of people who reply to stuff like this?

I like the sweetness of equal in my tea, but question whether it gives me headaches. I have never been able to fully connect the two (I get headaches for many reasons from stress, to needing to eat something, to tension from dry hair after french-braiding it when wet)

Sweetener of choice?

  • I can't think of the last time that I have personally sweetened something. When I sweeten strawberries, I use aspartame, but when I make cinnamon-sugar toast, I use the real stuff. I buy things that are artificially sweetened, but that's because I was brought up on diet pop, so all sugared beverages other than Dr. Pepper taste horribly syrupy to me. I also prefer the tart taste of artificially sweetened lemonade.
  • Personally, I rarely sweeten anything -- but if I do, it's sugar. The artificial things generally give me headaches. I can't drink *any* diet soda or drink.

And the whole soda vs. pop thing reminds me...what you say is pretty much location based. There's even a map [cnn.com].

    • I say cola, soft drink, or beverage... or call it by the brand name. I don't say soda or pop or sodapop.
      • well, here's the deal. I grew up calling everything coke. As in, what type of coke would you like? I'd like a Dr Pepper. Weird eh? I grew out of it (guess it's a southwest thing) and now call whatever beverage I drink by it's proper name.

Besides, once you drink Dr Pepper, everything else is just lame.
        • Yeah, my parents call all soft drinks Coke, and I previously did, but I was troubled by the fact that it was technically inaccurate. :-) So I made a consious effort to switch. Mostly I call everything by the brand name. And I couldn't agree more about Dr. Pepper, although because of a severe history of diabetes in my family, I have switched to Diet Dr. Pepper. Not as good as the real thing, but the best diet drink by far.
  • I drink diet cola or water all the time, and I've never had a problem with headaches. The leading cause of headaches in the US is actually dehydration. Do you drink enough water? I think they are recommending 64oz. per day now. I don't drink that much, but I try to at least have a 20oz bottle or preferably 2 of them. The only thing in soft drinks that I have heard of causing problems (I mean by someone other than the news media, who say EVERYTHING is going to kill you) is the caffeine. I had a friend who's doctor told her to lay off caffeine, because it isn't good for females. She was very thin, and it was especially a problem for her, because 1 can was several doses worth of caffeine for her. But I think it had a lot to do with her body chemistry, too. However, women are statistically more apt to have problems with caffeine than men.
    • I call it soda...and I drink alot of it, as long as it's diet. I'm addicted to caffeine, so if I don't have it, I get one major migraine. But then again, I suffer from migraines anyway so lots of things set it off, like not eating, bright sunlight, sleeping too much...etc. I read somewhere that chocolate can cause migraine headaches...I guess it's also a caffeine thing, but if that's the case, then I guess I'm destined to live with them...'cause I'm not giving up my chocolate..or my Diet Cokes. :)
    • No, it's not a dehydration problem (I drink plenty of fluid) nor a caffeine problem (it makes me not sleep at all, so I don't have any) -- it's a chemical problem. Things like Nutrasweet knock me out hardcore. Drinking Crystal Light or the like will render me useless for the rest of the day. Diet *anything* and I'm down for the count...

It's all as well -- it keeps me from drinking most sodas and sticky sweet gross things that I didn't need in the first place. :)

  • This dosn't really relate to beverages, but Ive found that any solid tastes bettter with a slice of chesse ontop.
  • I massively dislike all of the synthetic sweeteners and would also add high-fructose corn syrup to that set (and sometimes beet sugar). A number of years back I tracked down a great test case. A supermarket I went to had plain old Schweppes Ginger Ale and it was much better than Reed's, J&M, Boylan's, and all the other boutique brands. The reason? It was from Hong Kong and therefore (not being from the domain of Archer Daniels Midland) used cane sugar instead of that awful glop that permeates American products. I tested to see if this was only my preference, going so far as to actually hand glasses of the stuff to people without comment as just "some ginger ale" and the reaction was uniform.
In other words, I think that biggest blot upon our perception of sweeteners is that our culture uses such vast mounds of the stuff and then uses a reliably inferior version, that we develop an aversion to natural sweeteners overall.
So I'll stick to honey (if anything) in my tea or on toast, sugar in my baking, molasses in my barbeque sauce, and so forth.
