Comment Light - Laser (Score 1) 35

The new part of this research is forcing cells to produce a resonance chamber to produce the laser from light. I'm not sure how useful this is -- GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein) tagging has been used to track the movements (and reproduction) of cells for decades.

Not the best, although that depends on what your evaluation criteria is. Look at heat pump heaters, they basically run the AC on backwards. You end up blasting out even colder air through the outside radiator but end up getting more thermal energy out than you put electricity in.

"NoSQL" doesn't mean "No SQL". At least, not all the time. I've heard it pronounced "Not Only SQL" more than once. RDF triple stores can also be considered NoSQL databases, and they can provide ACID. (They use SPARQL instead of SQL as a query language - hence being something other than a SQL DB.)

3D-Printed Gun May Be Unveiled Soon 625

colinneagle writes "A 3D-printed gun capable of firing multiple rounds may be unveiled soon. Cody Wilson, the 25-year-old founder and director of nonprofit organization Defense Distributed, recently told Mashable that the end product of Wiki Weapon, the initiative to create an operational 3D-printed gun, may soon be ready to unveil to the public. In a March interview with CNN, Wilson said he hoped to have a printable gun ready by the end of April, so his most recent comments suggest that he may fulfill that promise. While Wilson was sparse with details, he did tell Mashable that the prototype would be a handgun consisting of 12 parts made out of ABS+ thermoplastic, which is known for its durability and is commonly used in industrial settings. The firing pin would be the only steel component of the 3D-printed gun, which will be able to withstand a few shots before melting or breaking. Wilson reportedly anticipates making an official announcement soon."

The Amazon Rainforest Wants Its TLD Back From Amazon.com 186

terrancem writes "The Seattle-based Amazon.com has applied for its brand to be a generic top-level domain name (.amazon), but South American governments argue this would prevent the use of this internet address for environmental protection, the promotion of indigenous rights and other public interest uses. Along with dozens of other disputed claims to names including ".patagonia" and ".shangrila", the issue cuts to the heart of debates about the purpose and governance of the internet."

It's been about 2 years since South Korea started using the standardized chargers. It's now expected that most internet cafes (PC bangs we call them here) supply chargers at each terminal. As the parent said, convenience stores have booths for paid charging.

The charging booths in convenience stores have been around for a long time, actually. The three major cell phone companies here (LG, SK, and KTF) have used unified chargers for their own brands for a much longer time, so it wasn't uncommon even 5 years ago to see 3-6 charging booths in stores.
