Submission + - DEFCON: Warballoon finds 1/3 of networks unsecured (networkworld.com)

avatar4d writes: "Networkworld is reporting about a warballooning operation that was grounded from being launched at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, but was covertly done so anyway. The team found approximately 370 networks and about 1/3 of those were unsecured. In addition to that, the project managed to show how unreliable our local law enforcement agencies really are:

"Near the end of the operation, a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police cruiser drove by the parking lot to see what was going on. Hill and his team waved. The police officers waved back and drove off.""

Submission + - China vs US in modern day "Space Race"

avatar4d writes: "From TFA: "It's all part of China's plan to integrate with — and compete against — the West, says Ladid, pointing to the 2,000-plus Chinese engineers on hand at the conference to learn about IPv6. They are the soldiers in the battle for the next Internet, the ones who will build China's new network and design the services that take advantage of it."

I could see how this might give them a slight initial advantage, but I don't think this will serious degrade the US as a major Internet powerhouse. It has been my experience that China's plan up to this point is to brute-force our systems. At least it seems that way from the IP's in my log files."
