Journal asv108's Journal: ROTD: Still using IE? 16

I don't mean to bitch about someone who is switching to firefox but how could anyone who reads /. on a regular basis still use IE?

I would love to have a look at the /. apache logs. It would be interesting to see what percentage "die-hard" users (multiple visits daily), still use IE. Does anyone here actually choose to use IE without having a gun held to their head?

ROTD: Still using IE?

    My meanderings:
    NS3 ~ IE3 ~ NS4 ~ IE4 ~ NS4 ~ Opera4 (cracked)
    ~ Opera5 (adware) ~ Opera6 (adware) ~ Opera7 (adware)

    Firefox is designed with IE users in minds. Switching to it after Opera is like breaking your own ankles.:)

    I might register Opera whenever version 8 rolls around. The current 7.50 beta is nifty (after a good ten minutes of customization, of course:).
    • I've only used opera a few times way back. What advantages does Opera have over say Firefox or Mozilla?
      • This is always a tough question to answer because a lot of these things are subconscious to me.

        0. Back button uses cache when it should and reloads when it should. In Opera, I can use the back button on SSL sites coded by assholes who think I should only be allowed to go forward. Also, web discussion boards never give me a "Page Expired" when I wave myself back in the surfing history. This makes my life faster and more pleasant.

        1. When the graphics are annoying, I can disable them or only set them to

    Last time I tried Mozilla, it was still pretty klunky. As a result of your JE, I downloaded Firefox and it seems to be pretty nifty.

    The one think I'd miss alot about IE is that I've got the Quick Search add-on (which allows you to type, for example, "y computers" into the address bar to seach Yahoo for "computers" or "g ice cream" to search Google for "ice cream") and I've set up alot of custom searches with it. So if I want to look up a number in the Toronto phone book on toronto.com, I type "to" plus the

      q=frames[i].document.getSelection();

      if(!q)
      void(q=prompt('Enter word to look up at google.com. You can also highlight a word on this web page then click on this link.',''));
      if(q)
      location.href='http://www.goo gle.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&q='+escape( q);

      That will search whatever is highlighted or typed on a page at google. You can modify for Yahoo or dictionary.com or thes

        Well a button that pops up a box to search google (and a seperate button for each SE) isn't really the same thing -- in fact that's no different than just bookmarking all the SE's.

    I can't and don't use IE, once I discovered tabbed browsing, I never ever went back. That and the exploit du jour for IE. BSD or Linux will break the habit for most, of course PHB's still love MS so I can imagine most people still have to use IE.
  • Mind you, I'm also pretty attentive when it comes to applying the Windows Updates, so I'm probably not the usual IE user... :)

    • I guess what I'm asking is why do you use IE over mozilla firefox?
      • I tried what was then Phoenix 0.5 (?), it was OK, but at the time I couldn't find any compelling reason to switch over to it full-time. I may take a look at Firefox 0.8, however, following a favourable report in PC Pro by Jon Honeyball, a well-known columnist and consultant over here who deals with large-scale deployments of Microsoft technology. He wrote that, although Firefox wasn't that much different to IE on the surface, it felt better by virtue of being faster and actually being cared for - he likened
  • of course, since I spend 90% of my computer time at work, most of my hits to /. are done in IE.
