Compuers, epsecially servers, should have proper names, and any services that need to be named (mail (pop, smtp, imap), news/nntp, svn, intranet, etc) should be alias's to the server that hosts the service.
for example, at my work pop.mycompany.com is interchangable with mail.mycompany.com, both of which resolve to athena, at the moment. exchange.mycompany.com is actually mercury, etc.
That way, when athena eventually gets replaced by jupiter, all the clients can still point to mail.mycompany, and have uninterupted service. and the techs dont get confused between the old and new computers.
