Journal aridhol's Journal: Ordinary Seaman Aridhol reporting for duty 5

I have now officially been a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for two hours. In 13 1/2 hours, I will be on a plane en route to CFFS Borden.

It seems that recruits with my training plan don't go through the regular training process. When I go tomorrow, I go not to boot camp, but to a three-week orientation. Here I will learn how to wear and maintain my uniform, and what is expected of me in the Navy. Eight-hour days, five-day weeks.

In three weeks, I fly from Borden to St. John's, Newfoundland, where I will spend the next two years (with breaks) at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. The first break will be when I go to boot camp, the ten-week yelling and pushup nightmare everybody loves. The second break is when I go aboard a ship for on-the-job training.

I also wasn't the only person fast-tracked. Another recruit was with me today. He was called on Monday, interviewed Tuesday, accepted Wednesday, and enrolled today. He will be on my flight tomorrow.

Right now I'm procrastinating from the packing I need to finish before I leave. My parents are taking me out to dinner this evening, and I'll probably go for a "few" drinks with BouncingBean tonight.

Remember, it's not a proper military course if you don't start it with a hangover.
