Asia, Pacific and Africa spur 11% growth

A total of 258 million mobile phones were shipped worldwide in the second quarter, up 11 per cent on the same period in 2006. That's according to a new report from Strategy Analytics, which reveals that the number of handsets shipped globally rose by four per cent from 247 million units in the first quarter of 2007.

Google May Close Gmail Germany Over Privacy Law 368

Matt writes "Google is threatening to shut down the German version of its Gmail service if the German Bundestag passes it's new Internet surveillance law. Peter Fleischer, Google's German privacy representative says the new law would be a severe blow against privacy and would go against Google's practice of also offering anonymous e-mail accounts. If the law is passed then starting 2008, any connection data concerning the internet, phone calls (With position data when cell phones are used), SMS etc. of any German citizen will be saved for 6 months, anonymizing services like Tor will be made illegal."

According to Microsoft, the average consumer spends six hours a day using the computer, so its latest mouse / keyboard bundle, the Natural Ergonomic Desktop 7000, is designed to make all that surfing as comfortable as possible. We've seen these designs separately as the Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 and the Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 6000, but the new bundle ditches the wires in favor of that clean wireless look -- although it's using a proprietary 2.4GHz RF link instead of Bluetooth. Other than that, there's not much else to see here -- in the midst of all this touchscreen mania, regular old mice and keyboards seem downright ordinary.
