Why don't competent UI/UX designers feel compelled to contribute to open-source projects?

Is it because UI/UX designers are universally a bunch of assholes? (unlikely)
Is it because UI/UX naturally evolves as a secondary concern to software development? (possibly)
Is it because the types that initiate/maintain open-source projects generally consider UI/UX to be of lesser importance? (now we're getting somewhere)

Thats probably why (as a general rule) server side open-source projects are more successful.

there are undoubtedly orders of magnitude more content creators in existence today - only the proportion of the whole has changed.

modern computing has made machines that are easier to use and more accessible to the masses but these 'masses' were never going to be content creators anyway.

Comment whats the advantage of privatising after 5 years? (Score 1) 300

i really dont understand one element of this plan - what is the benefit of privatising the company 5 years after completetion?

while the company is publicly owned the government can ensure the wholesale pricing to retailers (ISPs) remains reasonable. as soon as we sell the company arent we back in the same screwed situation we currently have with telstra?

Rocket Hobbyists Prevail Over Feds In Court Case 546

Ellis D. Tripp writes "DC District Court judge Reggie Walton has finally ruled in the 9-year old court case pitting the model rocketry community against the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The ruling is a 'slam dunk' for the rocketry community, stating that the BATFE ignored scientific evidence and overstepped its bounds by classifying ammonium perchlorate composite propellant (APCP) as an 'explosive.' Effective immediately, the BATFE has no legal jurisdiction over hobby rocket motors, and a federal Low Explosives User's Permit will no longer be needed in order to purchase APCP motors. The full text of the Judge's decision is reproduced at the link."

The Physics of Superman 421

eieken writes "The physics of Superman mostly belong in the realm of comic books, but some scientists decided to give their input on the matter. The article tells of 'a scientific experiment in which a researcher put several chickens in a centrifuge and raised them in twice-normal gravity for months at a time. When they emerged, the chickens were stronger and had larger bones and muscles, and greater endurance. In other words, they were superchickens.' Do they have human sized centrifuges?"
