Does the name 'Centronics' ring a bell? As in, the Centronics parallel interface? They were the 1st American company that designed/build/sold 3rd party printers. Before that, if you wanted a printer for your computer, you bought it from your computer vender (i.e., IBM, DEC, etc... ) at a 10x markup because they could. They did quite well, too, until the cheaper Japanese (Epson, Okidata... ) printers took over.
