You can buy almost any phone without a contract attached to it and it's unlocked from the start... If you calculate the cost added to the provider contract's monthly fee for the phone itself it almost always turns out that you pay more for the phone over the required period than if you would have bought it over the counter on the release date.

Submission + - Your License to Kill Is Hereby Revoked (peta.org) 6

Anders writes: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the largest animal rights organization in the world, endorse a new FLOSS license.

"The Harm-Less Permissive License (HPL) is a permissive, non copyleft, software license. It is based on the FreeBSD license but with one additional restriction; the "harm-less" clause. It prevents software, licensed under the HPL, to be used for harming humans or animals."

I've tried a bunch of different drivers and choosen the "Show disabled devices" option in the audio settings. I still don't have wave out or "what you hear". Anyone got any idea how to fix that? Are there some beta drivers perhaps? All the other solutions seem to be related to other sound cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sweden On Verge of Passing Sweeping Wiretap Plan 234

An anonymous reader writes "No one seems to have noticed that Sweden is close to passing a far-reaching wiretapping program that would greatly expand the government's spying capabilities by permitting it to monitor all email and telephone traffic coming in and out of the country. If a bill before parliament becomes law, the country's National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA) will monitor all internet traffic that passes in or out of the country. As the article notes, there's a good chance email traveling from, say, the UK to Finland would be fair game, since it's likely to traverse through Sweden before reaching its final destination. So far, there's been nary a peep from Swedish media about the plan."

MySpace Predator Caught By Code 374

An anonymous reader writes, "Wired News editor and former hacker Kevin Poulsen wrote a 1,000-line Perl script that checked MySpace for registered sex offenders. Sifting through the results, he manually confirmed over 700 offenders, including a serial child molester in New York actively trying to hook up with underage boys on the site, and who has now been arrested as a result. MySpace told Congress last June that it didn't have this capability." Wired News says they will publish Poulsen's code under an open-source license later this week.
