Anders writes: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the largest animal rights organization in the world, endorse a new FLOSS license.

"The Harm-Less Permissive License (HPL) is a permissive, non copyleft, software license. It is based on the FreeBSD license but with one additional restriction; the "harm-less" clause. It prevents software, licensed under the HPL, to be used for harming humans or animals."

    No, it doesn't (and how could it) - it prevents it from being used to bodily harm them.

    • You're right that it only prevents bodily harm. However "bodily harm" is a legal term and actually includes some forms of mental harm as well. What other types of harm do you have in mind?
      • Well, it's really hard to define, isn't it. What I might see as dumbing people down, others see as giving them what they want. What others see as harmless distraction or euphemism, I might consider outright evil. Bodily harm (even in the legal sense) is not the only kind of harm that is put on people, especially in the information/democracy age, and since there is no agreed definition of "harm", this is really just a neat idea, but nothing more. I just posted to correct the summary really.

        • I think it's great that you posted and I agree that the terminology is tricky! One legal definition of "bodily harm" (according to Wikipedia) is: "any hurt or injury to a person that interferes with the health or comfort of the person and that is more than merely transient or trifling in nature." This is really not that much clearer in the general philosophical sense :/ But since it is a legal term currently in use, there is quite a broad consensus (precedent) about how it is applicable to a real situatio
