Comment Was hoping for a more serious film (Score 1) 65

Spoiler bits... I didn't know anything about the story apart from it was by Andy Weir, and that it had the premise that life on Earth was under threat from something. No-one warned me it wasn't a serious movie, which I assumed it was, given the above. I wish I had known this and I would have viewed it differently.
So I was a bit nonplussed at it being somewhat corny: The alien goes "Rocky! and not the movie!" amongst the things it has learned from Gosling. The religiosity bit with "Do you believe in God" was unneeded, as was the female scientist karioke singing. 15 minutes to half an hour could have been cut as it is a long movie. All in all, it was just ...so american.

Comment Tipping and the Death Penalty (Score 1) 270

As an Australian I've not been to the States since the mid 60s so I expect it's changed a bit since then.
For years I've would have loved to visit to see museums and national parks but I then think I about the practice of tipping, and also the death penalty, and my brain freezes and goes
Yeah.. Nah.. Imagine walking down the street in the USA and thinking the government can legally kill you., or having to figure out how much to tip even if I don't want to.

Comment Landing pads (Score 1) 87

Looking at a photos of the IM-1 inside the fairing it seems the pads were quite small, and sharp edged. Perhaps the notion of having 6 legs led to a false sense of security in tipping, but if the pad's small has little of a raised edge it could well dig in with a bit of horizontal drift.
But of course it's so easy to argue about this now. They did very very well and I would not be surprised if their next one in a few months had redesigned pads.
