Journal Timex's Journal: Gmail 6

I was talking to a co-worker about Google's foray into the IM market with Google Talk, and I mentioned that I had read (on Slashdot, of all places!) that it was only available to people with a gmail account. The guy said that he had lots of invites available, and asked if I wanted one.

Well. I'm a Baptist, through and through: I accepted it 'cause it's free. ;) (Yes, I am aware of all the ramifications of actually using it... I was born with a tin-foil hat.)

Truth be told, it's not that bad. It's simple to navigate, it's easy to use. I actually think I like it.

Granted, it's not comparable to what I have at home; Google offers about 2.5GB space online, but I have over 100GB drive space... :D

I was told (by the guy that gave me the invite) that I would probably get one invite for signing up. I haven't seen any yet. Either one has to be using Gmail for a certain period first, Google are getting a bit more selective in who they give invites to, or they aren't giving any more out. Anyone have thoughts on that one?

  • It will not take too long, but you will get a daily allotment of 50 invites. It seems to kick in after a couple of weeks.

    • Takes a little while to kick and then they'll be there. I haven't given any away in weeks. Last time I did was when I mentioned having trouble unloading them in a thread off the front-page here at the dot. That was cool 'cause people from all over the place asked for invites. But that only lasted a couple days. So if between now and when you get yours-- if you know anybody who wants an account, just let me know.
  • I believe that if you install and use Google Talk, you can send a Talk invite to any email address. If it isn't a gmail address, it automatically includes a gmail invite as well.
    • I believe that if you install and use Google Talk,

      Which-- the Win* client?

If that's the case, it'll be a while before I see any Invites, then... I don't have access to a Win* box that I would intall the GT client on. (On the Win98 boxes I have, I use Trillian [trillian.cc]...)

Always leave room to add an explanation if it doesn't work out.

Working...
