The Linux kernel uses virtually every feature of gcc there is, that's why it's the traditional stress test. There will always be little inconsistencies and changes in how the compiler behaves, but because the kernel uses a lot of unusual features it's much more likely to be affected than a user-mode program.

As far as I know, the currently recommended compiler for building the kernel is 2.95.3. Using the 3.x releases is dodgy at best, and there was never really any chance that 3.3 would work straight away.

Ugh. Sick today. Stupid germs. Ah well, I guess this will give me some time to catch up on my sleep. Maybe do some reading. I've got that Agile Modelling book on my shelf...

On the bright side, at least I have Slashdot to keep me company. Oh, and my girlfriend's damned cat. Oh look...there it goes playing amongst the speaker wires again. yay.

Journal Journal: Damned fool flash MSDN banners

Ugh. Damn, are these MSDN banners annoying. I am not a Windows developer. I have no desire to become a Windows developer. Any attempt to sell me an MSDN subscription will fail, no matter how many flash-ridden onMouseOver ads you show me. The first time I saw these new ads, I said, "Wow! That's cool in an annoying sort of way!"

Isn't it a bit ironic to be worried about selling censorware to repressive regimes when no-one has any qualms about selling weapons to repressive regimes? I've never heard any politician anywhere complain even in the slightest way about that. But maybe it's better to kill strangers than to interfere with their surfing...
