Journal Tet's Journal: Invading Germany: Tet's world tour 2004, part 4 8

So tomorrow I leave for Germany. Sadly my other thirds don't have as much holiday as I do, so this will be a bit of a whistlestop tour. Blitzkrieg, if you will :-) We fly into Frankfurt[1] tomorrow morning, hire a car and head South to Hockenheim for the Nitrolympix, round 5 of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship. Then it's back on the last flight on Sunday in time for work on Monday morning.

Hockenheim is somewhat unique in terms of drag racing. Rather than the usual rough patch of tarmac that we have to work on, at Hockenheim we get to use the Forumla 1 pit garages. It's the only track with a permanent grandstand[2], and we can expect crowds of around 60,000. It's also the only venue to have night racing, so you can see the header flames ("bunny ears") in their full glory. We're not going to be racing in the night show on Saturday, as we'll be preparing for the first round of eliminations on the Sunday. However, one of our team mates who is out of contention for the championship will be taking part, along with a couple of other cars.

[1] Yes, I know Stuttgart is closer, but Ryanair only fly to Frankfurt :-)

[2] Apart from Santa pod. But Hockenheim's are orders of magnitude bigger.

  • A word to the wise (though I'm sure you already know this), RyanAir says it is flying in to Frankfurt but it really flies in to a little field called Hahn about an hours drive west of Frankfurt. I dropped off a rental car there before and the last gas station usually gouges on prices because they know you don't want to return a car with petrol missing and they are out in the middle of nowhere. There is, however, a petrol station on the highway 20Km or so east of the airfield. It is a pretty (and fast drive)

Yes, I knew that bit. I didn't know about the lack of petrol stations, though. Thanks for the tip! ViaMichelin.com reckons it's 95 miles from Hahn to Hockenheim, which hopefully won't be more than a couple of hours in total.

  • Just as a reminder, here are some helpful German phrases [slashdot.org] for your stay in Germany.

Ich trete Dich in die Eier is particularly good to use on Customs officials, I think.

Fortunately, of the four of us going, one speaks German pretty well, and I speak enough to get by, so we should be OK. The other two are reliant on us to keep them out of trouble :-)

Bah, useless. There's no translation there of "I have crack cocaine concealed internally" which sounds innoccuous! You'll never get him the full body cavity search with that lot...

That sounds innocuous enough to be useful, but what do you give as the translation to fool people into saying it? You could probably get them to say it at b

Quantity is no substitute for quality, but its the only one we've got.
