I have 120GB in my computer!!! Ok, so I have double digit GBs of MP3s, several GBs of pictures, and more games than I can play, plus MS Office (cause it's what we use at work) and Corel Perfect Office (because it's superior), but I've had all that for a while. I wonder if that has anything to do with my new toys? DVD burner, Firewire card, and I borrowed PH's miniDV camcorder. :-) Yep, too much raw video footage. Time to burn a DVD!

Oh, and just to piss gmhowell off... most of the footage is of Boo!!!! HAHAHAHAH! ;-)

  • The error is in ASCII, no less!

Whatever you did to make your machine drop into DOS, make sure I don't do it.
  • Is selling 250G drives for $145. This sounds like a good excuse to upgrade... I also have this video problem, mostly due to my ATi All-in-Wonder card turning the computer into a Tivo.
    • Definitely need to look into that. There isn't a Frye's around here, but I bet they have online ordering!
      • Outpost.com = Frys Online [outpost.com]

I just took my First Trip to fry's this weekend as they have them here in Texas but dont Have them Up in "Upstate" NY I have to say I was impressed!
        • Fry's == Geek heaven. We're getting one in Downers Grove IL "any time now". A coworker drives past every day and I harass him for updates every time I see him. No more flying to Cali to get my Fry's Fix.
      • Be careful dealing with Frye's/Outpost. They are known to do things like taking a defective returned item, re-shrink wrapping it, slapping a "refurbished" sticker on it, and putting it back on the shelf. I never buy anything from them unless I can verify that it is still sealed in the manufacturer's packaging. They are also very difficult on returns - you are getting a discount in return for having to deal with the manufacturer rather then returning your item to the merchant. You should check out the st
        • I've always found returns at Fry's incredibly easy, although the line does get long.

A few months back I got a new motherboard from a Fry's in northern California. For some reason the USB didn't work, so I took it back to the San Diego store. I had no receipt and it had come from different store. They still let me return it after some negotiating.

Of course, I watched as a guy in the background resealed it and slapped a sticker on, no doubt to be placed back on the shelf.

The best bet is probably to trea
    • I'm waiting for the new Fry's in Plano to have their Grand Opening sale. I heard that they didn't have one when they opened in December because they were afraid their staff would quit since they were already so busy with the Christmas rush.

When the store in Irving opened, I stood in line for well over an hour just to get in! Then, when I finally did get in, I had to spend another hour in line waiting to check out...but it was well worth the wait!! :)

      • Hmm... maybe I could send you my grocery list when that happens and you can pick up some things for me? I'm wanting to build a new PC for Video and have my old one become a media PC (and move to the living room).
      • We were at the Plano one the other day; my daughter wanted memory cards for her PS2. It's a lot cleaner (and, I think, better organized) than the Garland one. I assume that the Irving one is the old Incredible Universe, correct? Thanks for the tip, I will be watching for the sale. I bet that new store is just going to kill the CompUSA that's right across the freeway.
        • I'm not sure about the Irving store since I never went to Incredible Universe (ok, I don't even know what it is :) It looked like a completely brand new building. It's right off 635 on McArthur. It's pretty much identical to the new store in Plano.

There is no doubt that Fry's is going to kill that CompUSA. I wouldn't be surprised if it also did some heavy damage to MicroCenter's business.

          • Incredible Universe was an attempt by Tandy (I think), the parent corp of Radio Shack, to start a chain of electronics superstores, about ten or twelve years ago. Something like Frye's, but the prices were not as low. The Garland Frye's was originally an Incredible Universe. They lasted about three or four years, I think.

I'll still likely go to Micro Center, since it's only about five blocks from our house, but their business will be hurt. They do have a great selection of computer books, though, so
  • How much space does raw video take up? And how can you possibly have that much video of Boo if you can't see her fiddly bits?
    • How much space does raw video take up?

A shit load of space. When I was first starting to transfer our family videos to DVD I captured one of the videos using HUFFYUV, which is a lossless codec. Even with the reasonable compression of HuffYUV about 1.5 hour of video ended up being close to 60GB. Raw video gets HUGE real quick.

And how can you possibly have that much video of Boo if you can't see her fiddly bits?

Ahhh, but then it wouldn't really be raw video then. More like appropriately clothed video.
      • Guess that confirms it. My sister got a 'digital' video camera for Xmas. Not sure what it means, since it has both SD and videotape. I assume it has a firewire cable. Anyway, I was hoping to do some video and convert to DVD. And with what you are telling me, I need another hard drive to do that:) Only 12.5 GB available now (probably have two or three DVDs in the process of being re-encoded for the toddler, so up that by quite a bit, and I'm still only around 35 or so free).

I think I'm also out of case spac

DV or MPEG video is much smaller

        • My rule of thumb for working with the DV compression format is 20 minutes = 4 gigs of space. It's actually about 18 minutes, but 20 is a nice round number.

If you pull video off a digital camcorder, it will usually be in the DV format unless the program is doing some sort of conversion.

Yeah, just about when we thought that storage capacity was finally getting to ridiculous proportions and that no one could possibly use it all... video digitization equipment started getting cheap.

That'll cost us another generation or two. But I still say time is on the users' side.

  • A while back Sam(the Butcher) pointed me to LaCie, so I got a 80gig FireWire external disk... and I gotta say I love it. I'll prolly get another one or a larger one. Its fast, and really cool looking too :)

120GB ought to be enough for anybody!
    • I said that to myself one day.

      So I bought 5 120 GB harddrives.

I made a 200 GB RAID-5 array. (The other 2 drives went to a backup solution in a different machine.)

      I'm scared now.

"Virtual" means never knowing where your next byte is coming from.

Working...
