  • Thanks for the shoutout, dude! ;-) The trash can looks good.

The stainless backsplash really brings it all together. Nice job! Oh, and we get it, that wasn't your arm. Of course, I noticed that first off, because it wasn't so hairy. j/k

Hmm, I've never heard of this 5S theory. Very interesting! Of course, if I set up my workspace like this, I would have to lose the 3 coffee mugs full of writing utensils and jumping springloaded bunny. Besides, clutter is cozy. :)

Looks like fun! I have been busy cutting drywall so I can relate.. A friend of mine gave me a good tip- put lipstick on the recepticle boxes so it marks your drywall (or sheet metal in your case)- that way you don't have to measure everything.. you can just cut out the lipstick with a jigsaw.

How much was the trash can? We are looking for one like that.

Anyway, I'm going to post a url to my pics very soon in my JE. I've been taking pictures of the progress, I just have to get them online now. Hopefully tonight.

Damn, and me without mod points! That little suggestion will save me some time and hassle this weekend. Thanks.

    • It was $60 at Target. They had some smaller ones that were less, but I won't have a trash can in the kitchen smaller than 10 gallons.
  • Clearly stainless steel was the way to go. The backsplash really looks good against the floor. +1, Funny for the first picture.

Something I added to my kitchen was an old 3com Audrey [protowrxs.com] (photo found via google). I mounted mine under a wall cabinet. It gets used every day for checking the weather and a quick read of the news.

Please post more photos and the final cost =).

  • Your new backsplash looks good. We had a similar one behind our stove when we moved into our house last year, but decided to remove it because it didn't fit once we removed the ancient, grease-encrusted microwave above it. Also, it wasn't installed as nicely as yours is.

But we managed to give our old backsplash new life. It is now a magnet board in the den, lending an air of industrial chic to the room.
  • My firewall at work won't allow _ in the URL. Booooooo! I'll check your pics when I get home tonight.
  • We're working on converting over to Lean Manufacturing at my place of employment, and when I clicked on your 5S link, I just about died.

Now I wonder, though, if that would really work at home? It seems that no matter how often I arrange the pantry, entropy takes over and within a couple of weeks, the neatness is gone.

I'm sure having two kids doesn't help much either, but labelling could be a start...

    • I started doing it as almost a joke, but it really has helped. I have a room mate who is a bartender and a DJ at a local radio station. (He bartends at a resturant, not at the radio station, in case that was unclear.) :-) He has the world's shortest attention span. He will pick something up and use it, and forget where he picked it up. This way, he can just look for the label with nothing sitting on it. It also helps me do a quick walk through on the way to the grocer and see if we are out of anything
      • How well does this work for items on higher up shelves where you can't see the labels if there's something in front?

        • I haven't gotten that far yet, but I'm thinking I'm going to put them on the bottom of the next shelf, or do a layout sheet to go on the door. Something like:

Top shelf: 12oz glasses, Wine glasses
          ___________10oz glasses, Martini glasses
Middle Shelf: soup bowls, mixing bowls
          ______________cereal bowls
Bottom Shelf: breakfast plates, dinner plates
          ______________saucers

That way you know which shelf and if it is in front or back. I'm not sure, I'm kind of making it up as I go along. I'll keep posting pics, thou

  • A geek discussion about remodeling and kitchens, at last, my quest is complete!

I'm currently in the midst of remodeling my 1942 garage into something usable, because we need the current office as a potential nursery.

30% workshop and bike storage area, 70% office. Done it all on our own: Framing, drywall, window, wiring (with 3/4" conduit), lighting, some insulation, and opening the space into the attic so we have some good storage for the house. Pretty soon, Pergo and cabinets.

    Luckily, we've some help an
