Journal Talinom's Journal: What's in your toolbox 4

It better be duct tape. This stuff does everything. Read the article and find out how this amazing tool can do anything from hauling cars and fixing everything[1] to killing warts and saving you from sucking chest wounds.

[1] Except fixing ducts. They found that it was the only thing to fail to repair ducting.

  • I don't believe that. I've used it to fix ducts, specifically on my clothes dryer.

The screw-ups at Wired clearly must have been using it wrong.

    • They mennt heating ducts.

IIRC, they tested it by taping all the joints in a forced-hot-air system, then seeing how long it took to fail. Of course, it leaked pretty quickly. Long flat surfaces, exposure to hot, dry heat == not good.

Surfaces that are convex are better taped than flat surfaces (most heating ducts are rectangular in cross-section).

  • The toolbox is incomplete without a can of WD-40.

If it sticks and it shouldn't, use WD-40.

If it doesn't stick and it should, use duct tape.

If it sticks and it should, or if it doesn't stick and it shouldn't, then you haven't fiddled with it enough.
