They mennt heating ducts.
IIRC, they tested it by taping all the joints in a forced-hot-air system, then seeing how long it took to fail. Of course, it leaked pretty quickly. Long flat surfaces, exposure to hot, dry heat == not good.
Surfaces that are convex are better taped than flat surfaces (most heating ducts are rectangular in cross-section).
My favourite use:

If it sticks and it shouldn't, use WD-40.
If it doesn't stick and it should, use duct tape.
If it sticks and it should, or if it doesn't stick and it shouldn't, then you haven't fiddled with it enough.
