No, he shouldn't be pardoned. What he did was illegal. Maybe he'll be pardoned. That will depend on the next administration. Nonetheless, I believe that he was acting in the interest of Americans. Sometimes the "right" thing to do is illegal. But that doesn't mean the law should be nullified for an exception. Still, I do think that whatever punishment is designated for what he did should be balanced with the results that his information produced. Also, Has national security really been compromised? Or has government surveillance decreased since the Snowden incident? What really has changed since then?

These features, plus the lack of advertising are why I paid up, too. Background play "on desktop" is simply a matter of opening a new tab. I don't use Netflix, Spotify, or any other streaming service. Ten dollars a month rolls all of those features into one. And I can watch and listen to art without commercial interruption.

Submission + - Harnessing heat for 80% theoretical efficiency (pv-magazine.com)

Kant writes: Scientists at Rice University in Texas have developed a device which converts heat into light by squeezing it into a smaller bandgap. The ‘hyperbolic thermal emitter’ could be combined with a PV system to convert energy otherwise wasted as heat – a development the researchers say could drastically increase efficiency.

Submission + - How You Move Your Phone Can Reveal Insights Into Your Personality (sciencealert.com)

schwit1 writes: "It may sound strange at first, but a team of researchers in Australia has come up with a method to predict your personality traits using just the accelerometer in your phone.”

Well, that and your call and messaging activity logs. Also, the system works for some traits better than others. But it's an interesting take on how we may find connections through such seemingly unrelated things.

Submission + - Scientists stunned by 'city-killer' asteroid that just missed Earth on July 25 (washingtonpost.com) 1

SonicSpike writes: Alan Duffy was confused. On Thursday, the astronomer’s phone was suddenly flooded with calls from reporters wanting to know about a large asteroid that had just whizzed past Earth, and he couldn’t figure out “why everyone was so alarmed.”

“I thought everyone was getting worried about something we knew was coming,” Duffy, who is lead scientist at the Royal Institution of Australia, told The Washington Post. Forecasts had already predicted that a couple of asteroids would be passing relatively close to Earth this week.

Then, he looked up the details of the hunk of space rock named Asteroid 2019 OK.

“I was stunned,” he said. “This was a true shock.”

This asteroid wasn’t one that scientists had been tracking, and it had seemingly appeared from “out of nowhere,” Michael Brown, a Melbourne-based observational astronomer, told The Washington Post. According to data from NASA, the craggy rock was large, an estimated 57 to 130 meters wide (187 to 427 feet), and moving fast along a path that brought it within about 73,000 kilometers (45,000 miles) of Earth. That’s less than one-fifth of the distance to the moon and what Duffy considers “uncomfortably close.”

“It snuck up on us pretty quickly,” said Brown, an associate professor in Australia with Monash University’s School of Physics and Astronomy. He later noted, “People are only sort of realizing what happened pretty much after it’s already flung past us.”

Initially, I hosted my vanity domain on an old laptop in my apartment. The poor quality of Internet, however, derided me from hosting my primary mail server there. Eventually, I moved everything to a hosting company. I still get what I want: an exclusive email address with my vanity domain and running on Linux...but less headache and stress when it comes to stability and maintenance. I still get some spam every once and awhile.
