StalinsNotDead's Journal: Recent Hitchhikers Guide Movie Preview Review

The article stated that the actor portraying the role of Fore Prefect was to be played by a black rapper.

There wasw much hue and cry, but it was stated that no canonical material stated Prefect's ethnicity. (at least that was the sentiment the last I read the article)

But I'm reading the novels again, and I came acroos this passage.

High in a tree on the edge of the clearing squatted Ford Prefect, lately returned from foreign climes. After his six-month journey he was lean and healthy, his eyes gleamed, he wore a reindeer-skin; his beard was as thick and his face as bronzed as a country-rock singer's.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. pg 221 1st paragraph.

Bronzed-skin, and the look of a country-rock singer would seem to me to indicate a caucasian complexion.

Any thoughts?

A Black Ford Prefect

Nothing can shock me any more. I gave up questioning casting when they put Will Smith as Jim West in that Wild Wild West movie.

Personally I liked how Prefect was portrayed in the BBC series, and that's how I'll always envision him.

One has to wonder, sometimes, about what motivates the movers and shakers in the media. I'm not sure that it can be simply categorized without being misinterpreted, but I will say that they are oftentimes motivated by more than just the desire to make a profit or make a good

IMDB shows Mos Def [imdb.com] to be starring as Ford Prefect.

If true, I'm interested to see how they are going to manage to show us the scene after your quoted passage, where they escape the Restaurant at the End of the Universe in the ship with black-on-black controls, and black-on-black displays. The only contrast in this scene would surely have been a caucasian Prefect. Now the best we can hope for is a floating costume and mysterious voices on the screen for about 5 minutes.
