Journal Some Woman's Journal: Best Christmas Gift Evar. 21

Yes, I've been bitten by the evil conformist consumerism bug.

A friend of mine just gave me an Albert Einstein action figure. :^)

What's the best thing you've given/received?

A) socks
B) other
C) Capitalism is evil
D) Consumerism is evil
E) Capitalism is consumerism, you twit
F) Love. I'm an unapologetic sap.

Well, on that note...rumor has it that Separations exams don't study for themselves. And it's a damn shame, too.

  • And when you're the parent, helping with the studying means trying to recall stuff that you studied 20 years or more ago. Fortunately, my daughter got her best grade of the semester on the exam. So now she has two and a half weeks off...
    • At least you can help her. My dad couldn't help me past 7th grade because he grew up in the era of high school seniors taking algebra. I think he went through calculus in college, but I've noticed something distinctively un-usable about all math I've "learned" in college.
      • She's into about the same level of calc that I had in high school; I think that they covered our entire senior year calc in the first semester. It's going to be interesting next semester. :-) I had through second year calc and group theory in college (I was a math major for a year and a half). I've used my calc pretty much only once since college, and I've never seen a differential equation since leaving the classroom. To be fair, though, I use some of the discrete math from my CS classes frequently.
  • I don't know.... I gotta lot neat things over all those years. The thing I just remember now would be the Sega Game Gear (but I'm biased, I just read a JE about the Gameboy Advance). To get that I had to combine, Saint Niclaus (6th december), my birthday and Christmas.

To be fair: we never give presents on Christmas. The reasons for this are historical. Traditionally our family exchanges presents the 31st december. We have stopped this tradition a few years ago, because nobody could find neat present

I am transferring all our family videos to DVD so all the family can have something which should last a bit longer than the old tapes. (Some of the tapes are not in the best of condition as they're almost 20 years old, so I really want to get this out of the way ASAP before they deteriorate too much...)

I am also scanning in all the photos that dad has and will be making DVD slideshows of those for everyone too. (Plus dumping a shitloada *.jpgs onto data DVDs for those with computers.)

    Both these projects a
  • I don't think that they were the best presents, but they were the most memorable. I really miss playing with Play Dough.

Just so that everybody knows, the laser guns didn't make us violent. :^) My temperment is a little bit too much on the other side. It was fun. The package contained some kind of "space warrior" belt, which would hold the laser gun, a "futuristic" flashlight, a little dohicky for sending morse code [you push the button to move the mirrors to put spaces between the light signals; makes sens
  • That's what Boo's getting this year. Well, that and a penguin ring, and a book, and letter (written in Calligraphy on custom stationary that I made on the computer), and keychain, a die cast tractor (that's a joke gift because she said she liked tractors the night we fell in love and I was looking at her and she said, "Don't buy me a tractor!" because she said she liked penguins and I bought her a stuffed one.) and some other stuff.

The other night I was on the phone with her and I told her I bought her a

  • any ideas as to a website for said action figure? I have a slight interest in the man.

It was 1985 and I got the NES. Since then, I've been hooked and play video games when I should really study for my final exams.
  • there's no better gift than what shows you pay attention to what a person will get joy from.
  • A few days ago, at my neighborhood bookstore [page1book.com] I saw some funny stuff: Librarian action figure, Moses action figure, Jesus action figure.

I think these have been around for a long time; a friend of mine once had a comedy routine that involved mixing a Jesus action figure with Star Wars action figures.

  • The best gift ever was for my birthday several years ago. My then gf went more than halfzies in on buying me the bestest train engine ever. It is my Reading T-1 4-8-4 #2102. My favorite engine and the best paint job ever. I take this engine someplace and I receive accolaids and drolls from all who lay eyes on her.

If you could see my place right now, there are dozens of pictures of the real T-1 haning all over the place, it looks like some shrine to the engine where it sits under glass right now with se
