Journal SolemnDragon's Journal: crazy about the weather 9

this is from http://www2.whdh.com/weather/

but before they updated it off the page...

here's the weather advisory from early this morning, word for word:

Battlestations! MAJOR snow's on the way. Here's the tenative timetable:

Another frigid night tonight. Lows a few degrees either side of zero. Hazy sun tomorrow as light snow continues out on Cape Cod.

Those snowshowers on Cape Cod join hands with a developing band of snow offshore and sweep into Boston in the afternoon. Meantime, the meat of the storm moves up from the southwest late day. We're in a pickle! The game is on!

Steady light snow turns heavy and ugly by midnight as the lines between ocean-effect and the main-storm blur. Sideways snow with near-blizzard conditions by the wee hours on Cape Cod and the Islands. Boston will be near whiteouts at times...classic nor'easter style.

The snow will be like baby powder: light and fluffy, but also dense in wind-driven snow banks. Try and keep it off your buns though.

Problems include the possibility of splashover at high tide on Sunday morning (see above) and the near-blizzard conditions on the Islands (ferry service may be halted) Sat. night and Sunday AM. Cape Cod/Martha's Vineyard/Nantucket take it on the chin with this one.

Snow in Pittsburgh? Yeah tomorrow morning. Should be gone by game time with temps in the teens. Snow on the sidelines and maybe in the stands will give the Pittsburgh fans something to play with when the Pats are up by 30 in the fourth quarter.

FYI, I got dibbs on the english muffins in the bread isle - don't mess with me...I know Mr. Whipple.

GO PATS!
Pete

Word of advice, when the weather foreteller cries, 'battle stations,' don't be surprised when the power goes out in the grocery store. Fortunately, i'd made it past checkout. Power's back on for now.

Snow's still coming down.

Looks like i'm wearing my snowsuit to work on monday.

Therapy went well. I have some perspective again. She had some good ideas.

More on those later. For now, curl up, have a hot drink (of whatever you drink) and have a blanket. We'll watch the snow.

  • It certainly seems I made it out of Boston just in time. I left the summer before last which allowed me to miss last years -infinity temps and this years wonderful storms.

Though the first winter I was there, beginning of 2001, they canceled work for 2.5 days which apparantly was unheard of there.

    Stay warm.
  • WTF kind of name is "Chikage"?
  • we have just enough for me, well, actually no snow is plenty for me, but we live in a normally snowy area, so light snow even into january is yayage.
I am about as fond of snow as I am of doing real work. which is saying a lot...
  • The weather people around here in SE Viginia were getting everyone into a tizzy the last few days of the week prepping for the big snow storm we were going to get this weekend, something like 6 inches tonight supposedly, which for us is bad. Sheesh, nearly everything closed this past wednesday to ice and an inch or two of snow.

Well, something changed since friday, and now we are getting drizzly rain, which has been going on all afternoon, which will probably freeze by morning. It does look like we have an
  • But usually afterwards, it wasn't so bad. :) Not always though, sometimes I was pretty upset for a long time after.

Well, I AM cozy. I'm having some hot tea, studying, and it's pretty cool in my apartment because I like to put a lot of warm clothes on. So, I'm cozy as hell. :) My kitty is purring on my lap too really keeping me warm. No fdb though cuz she's working this weekend.

Be careful if you have to go out in this!

    • i always need a whole day after therapy to process and recover. its hard work. i need a break. its like a wave that builds all week, and breaks at once and then everything retreats leaving me feeling pretty scraped clean... so the wave can build again. someday that wave is going to be a ripple.

yeah, its cold here. not cuddled up. i'm freezing. heats on but not doing its job so much. i slept almost the entire evening on the couch... i woke up completely disaoriented... missed a few calls on the cell. shit.
  • Though not compared to there. :-) Perspective is good.
  • 20 inches of snow on my *covered* front porch. And that wasn't even a drift!

The snow also came in through my back door (also covered, but better coverage apparently)

My car, on the other hand, did not fare so well. It's stuck in a 44 inch snow drift. With the snow still coming and the wind still howling, I didn't bother digging it out.

    I took pictures.

    • Send them to SiliconJesus to add to him montage if you would like. Wow. 44inches of SNOW! The most I've ever seen is 36" here, and that was called The Blizzard of '96. I'd be all bundled up jumping off things into the snow. (After making sure there wasn't a car or something buried in the drift, 'cause that'd suck.) :-)
