Journal SolemnDragon's Journal: Red Warrior, Unmasked 18

Well, it's official. RW was out here for the weekend- he happened to be in town, so of course we helped him do the "Boston Tourist" thing. We'd have been crazy not to- i mean, the guy is not what he pretends on slashdot to be. No, the REAL Red Warrior is, in fact, an eight-foot barbarian with a wicked grin, terrible table manners, and a coke habit.

We met him at the airport. I was a little surprised that they'd let him bring the bloody axe on board, but blinder pointed out that one of the three severed heads hanging from his belt might be from someone who tried initially to stop him. He did have to get the rest of his arsenal from the baggage claim. Sure, the axe, they let him bring on board, but i guess they drew the line at the live hellhounds. Or maybe it was that there were five of them, i don't know. Sure made it interesting getting home on the T.

So we brought him home, and while we now have one fewer neighbour, what the hell. We had to fix RW some dinner, and we're moving out of here soon anyways.

We did the duck tour thing. We didn't have as useful a tour guide as usual, this time it was a peculiar old man, but other than that, it was fun. We brought the wheelchair, 'cause i was pretty beat. I didn't have any allergic reactions this weekend, i'm happy to say, so RW didn't get the 'hospital tour' of boston.

I only emailed the people who have actually shown for meetups here before; i no longer have a roster of who-all is local, and i didn't want to give away that RW was in town on the 'dot until i had his say-so to do so. (He gave me permission to journal this.)

So saturday, we had a bit of meetup, at least, i got RW, Daoine, blinder, trmj, and pezstar in the same room at the same time. Daoine's first words were, and i quote, "What the fuck kind of frou-frou drink is THAT?"

At which point RW fed her to the hounds, and we went on with our meal. You can taunt a guy about his axe, his shoes, or his horse, but god help you if ya try to mess with his drink.

Pancho couldn't make it, so i brought GF hazelnut and bittersweet chocolate chip cookies.

And ordered mashed potatoes and broccoli, and didn't have any allergic reactions.

Blinder & RW went walking the freedom trail part of the way, we hung out in hahvard squayuh, (Harvard square), and had some incredibly awesome hot chocolate at burdick's. Blinder bought me some ridiculously expensive dolfin chocolates from cardullo's, *blush blush* and daoine told us the story of the septic tank pumpkins, which i'm not sure i can do justice to in repetition (No, that's not a euphemism, it really was about pumpkins and a septic tank.)

then i was so tired i couldn't do any more, so we came home. We watched a movie, but i was so tired i don't remember which. Blinder tells me it was L. A. Story. I think he's right, now that he mentions it.

Today was more touristing, with a trip to Fanueil Hall, and Quincy Mahkut (market.)

Then blinder delivered the RW to the airport, and he's headed home. So what i have to say about RW is as follows:

-he's awesome

-he's every bit the hero we all think

-he tells good stories, is an excellent guest, my kitten likes him, and he's incredibly comfy to be around.

-DON'T EVER MAKE FUN OF HIS DRINK.

Oh, and he doesn't eat enough, but that's just my perspective as a hostess. If people can still walk, i haven't fed them enough.

Blinder says i must add that his ability to find his way in boston is nothing short of amazing- he could figure out the backwards-and-upside-down tourist maps that they give out AND even knew where he was most of the time just by using landmarks. Most longtime residents simply give up, walk forwards until they pass through boston entirely, and then march around the outside until they are pointed at where they want to be before wading back in. It's no mystery why the highway loop exists going around boston- 128 just screams, "Do over." He definitely gets the navigation merit badge for Boston.

Yay, RW! Thanks for stopping by! (You've got a standing invite in case you're ever in town again)

No, i didn't pack any boxes this weekend. *looks around guiltily* It should be quite a week...

  • my kitten likes him,

First, this is all-important. Everyone knows the inherent abilities of kittens to tell a person's personality. Those that aren't aware of this fact (or claim not to be) are aparently on some kitten's Bad Side.

Second, I live in the Boston area, and I work in Needham. Please be so kind to let me know of these get-togethers. I might be able to make one. I'm disappointed that I didn't get to meet RW. That would have been great.
    • w00t!

count on it! (we asked him what he wanted us to do, i guess he wanted to steer clear of the 'you should do X while in town' journal replies? next time i hope to have more time/warning/publicity and i'm hoping he'll visit again before too long)

Can i take you on a duck tour in the meantime??

      • But of course I will.

I've never thrown a piano through a picture window yet...

      • we asked him what he wanted us to do, i guess he wanted to steer clear of the 'you should do X while in town' journal replies

this is hardly surprising. I do the same sort of things. :)

Can i take you on a duck tour in the meantime?

There's a thought, but I don't know what that would be like, with winter coming... Sure the weather is good now... :D How long are they?
        • till november, i think- shoot me an email and we'll figure it out. You should meet some of our other locals, too, like blinder.

            Will-do...

You should meet some of our other locals, too, like blinder.

given recent JEs, I thought that meeting you implied meeting him? :)

BTW... Love your site. The Twins are a hoot.
    • Our cat has absolutely and completely loved everyone who has ever come through our door. Have we been exceptionally lucky with the people we meet or do we have a defective cat?
      • Our cat has absolutely and completely loved everyone who has ever come through our door. Have we been exceptionally lucky with the people we meet

        It's possible.

...or do we have a defective cat?

I wouldn't say 'defective'... There comes an age of a cat when s/he has decided that it's more trouble to hiss and scratch than it's worth. The younger ones don't have any problems showing what they feel, though.

All this, and my grandmother's cat used to attack everyone's ankles, regardless... He thought
        • She's been this way since we got her when she was one year old. She is instantly extremely affectionate with everyone she meets. She does what we call "lap surfing" -- going around the room curling up on each lap for a while and then moving on to the next. She goes first for the person she's never met before. We've had her for four years and we've never heard her hiss or seen her scratch.
  • we will make it up to your area, probably in 2 years or so. Put us down for the Duck Tour.
  • We're quite fond of him over here too! I'm glad you finally got to meet him.

DON'T EVER MAKE FUN OF HIS DRINK.

Inquiring minds want to know. What frou-frou drink did he order *this* time?

    ^_^

  • I've been to a lot of odd places rarely getting lost, and four years ago, when I was trying to find my way into Logan (at night), I ended up taking quite the tour of the South-East (at least what I *think* was the South-East) city. Anyone who can find their way around that *@#@$@%% place has my respect.

    • the funny thing is... the south is the east... and the east doesn't really exist! yay for boston!

there is no "east boston" really... and south boston? yeah, that's really east. make sense yet?

and yes, when i first came up to boston and rented a car, last christmas... the area around logan is just completely stupid. for future reference aim for i-90 for west (think cambridge/watertown) and i-93 for north/south. oh... but keep in mind that because of the big dig... there's only eleventeen million detours to g
      • See, I remember an easy tunnel out, that got me right onto a highway, but I never found the same tunnel in. I ended up getting there through something that didn't even vaguely resemble where I came from. Even then.. heavy construction.
  • So.... RW goes to Boston, where everybody ELSE seems to be wearing fur barbarian boots. What's up with that?
