Journal SolemnDragon's Journal: Welcome back to allergy land 14

There will be a slight delay as sol cusses for a few minutes.

Right. I'm a bit better now.

Today's random allergy reaction, which is restricted to some form of contact allergy, as my face and hands started having a swelling and rash, quite suddenly- now considerably less thanks to the benadryl- is to...

UNKNOWN AGENT.

That's right. We have NO idea what caused it, and i need to come up with an appointment at the allergist sooner, rather than later.

In the meantime, i have to suspend use of hand sanitisers, moisturisers, anything that might have done this. I was fine until a couple of hours ago when i started itching, and suddenly my skin started turning red and swelling up on my hands, neck, and face. They tell me (again) that it's allergy.

Does anyone out there deal with these things? Maybe it's a chemical sensitivity, and it's all been part of a reaction to the same thing? I don't know. I'm stumped. (and swollen.) It definitely is an allergy. The benadryl makes it less.

I don't know what to do. My face got pretty swollen this time. It still is, despite the benadryl, which isn't making me a pretty sight here at work. I don't have a clue how to handle something like this, so i'm looking to just come in contact with as few things as possible until i can get to a doctor, because this is really starting to concern me.

Any ideas?

Update: I have an appointment for the 29th, and they'll test me for the usual battery and also for whatever else i bring in, telling me to bring in a sample (prepared as per usual for samples- no cross contamination, etc.)

At least i have an appointment now.

  • Is that you're allergic to Benadryl bottles.

    Hope you feel better.
    • Nah. She's allergic to blinders. ;->

Seriously, don't forget to have them check for allergies to all his products (shampoo, soap, colone, etc), as I assume you sometimes are in close proximity to one another.

      • i think THIS one is here at work- it didn't happen till i was here, and seemed to happen real fast.

itches like hell, too, on top of my wearing green today, so between the red and the green i look like a christmas tree...
  • When I lived in CA folks who had all sorts of different random symptoms would eventually go to Stanford and get checked out there. WIth all the bizarre stuff that has been happening to you I wonder if it might be worth it to check out one of the local University hospitals since, if it is a relatively rare underlying cause, they'd be more likely to pick it up.

    Best of luck with everything.

  • Any new plants in the office?

Someone wearing a new cologne or perfume? (Especially someone near you)?

Not using any different laundry detergents, right?

blinder. is it blinder? :D Just kidding.

maybe ask if they changed air filters for your air conditioning at work recently? if they used cheaper ones or accidentally used and older one for some reason that had a lot of mold in it?

is there any construction going on at your job anywhere in the building?

sorry you're going through this sol. i have pretty bad
  • That sucks. I hope you figure it out soon. My oldest boy has some random skin issues related to allergy. We have to be careful with him about things like deoderant, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc... In his case, he tends to crack and bleed when he gets ahold of something his skin doesn't like. Unfortunately, he usually just has to suffer and use ointment until/if we figure out what set him off this time. It's not quite as serious as yours sounds.

He can't shave often, either. So he goes around scruffy
    • Sounds a lot like the aluminum allergy my mother has. No anti-perspirants, only deoderants. Most moisturizers and skin creams have aluminum in them. No Downy or softeners like that. Some sunscreens, too.

It's not an allergy to pure aluminum, as best we can tell. Aluminnum foil doesn't cause issues. It's the aluminum *whatever* in these products that causes the problems.
  • Could there be some strange connection between the lettuce that you had a reaction to and now your rash? For example: did you wash your lettuce with anything or store it somewhere that you just used or visited right before your outbreak?

Best of luck on your search!
    • i'm wondering that, too. Last time it was more severe, but i ingested it. This time it's on my skin, and the benadryl helps, but damn. i gotta figure this out, this is getting scary fast. The good news is that i go to the doc the 29th, and they're expecting this.

Looking into several new healthcare options, too, including a higher-priced clinic that specialises in more managed care. i need someone to help keep track of all of this, preferably someone who can see me sooner after events.
  • I have a mild allergy to formaldahyde. Sadly, new clothes - specifically cotton clothes - have a tendancy of being treated with it prior to shipping to the store.

Sometimes I'll walk through a department store, and randomly touch some thing that I'm thinking of buying, and my hand starts swelling and itching.

    Just me.

  • Now, I'm basing this on what commonly happens to me, but I mention it because we have some of the same ailments, so maybe this might be true for you too.

This new reaction might not due to a completely new allergen. It might be happening because you're still having a histamine reaction in your body to the lettuce, and things that normally don't cause trouble are suddenly triggers. In other words, your body went into ultra-sensitive mode and doesn't seem particularly inclined right now to chill.

    I am allergic
  • was the cleanup after the ceiling work was done ? or did someone use your phone ?
  • My brother does sometimes have allergic reactions to scented products. A co-workers hand-lotion is one that caused him trouble. He also has allergies to soy products, but I don't know if the two are at all related since I know nothing about what chemicals are involved in the ingredient "fragrance". :/
