Journal SolemnDragon's Journal: Too late to plan a party. 18

I forgot my own birthday.

I mean, it hasn't happened yet, but i forgot that somehow it's already late August. I forgot that i meant to plan for a party. I was originally gonna host a slashdot meetup, but no one was interested. So i changed the plan to a birthday party this year, and then stopped planning in the chaos that happened next. And it's too late to get my friends torn away from their work/life/family schedules. I asked around after one finally said, hey, you stopped talking to everyone, what happened? Truth be told, i'm a little depressed that i 'forgot.' (By 'forgot' read: too much going on.) i was really hoping to have my friends in for my birthday, but while i might manage to put together something small, it isn't the same as the once-a-year big thing i'd planned.

Well, i have a lot going on. Health stuff (which is more stable, but i haven't been able to go running yet), a host of minor adventures, a bunch of projects, work stuff, and some other stress as well. My attention is pretty damned scattered. I'm having real trouble keeping track of things.

All the more reason that i should take time out and do something on my birthday, but i need a plan B.

Suddenly, i realise that my birthday is a week away, and i have to renew my driver's license before then or i'm in real trouble. And i don't even have time for that. i have doctor appointments, errands to run, and i'm just having a rough week. *solemndragon cusses quietly and writes several items on her 'things to do' list.*

i don't have energy for baking cakes.

So i guess the question is, what should i do for my birthday? It's last minute, and ideas should be
  a.) inexpensive,
b.) not labour-intensive, for me or others
and c.) capable of being accomplished alone.

*cusses rather less softly*

*sigh*

Well, so much for plan A. I am smart enough to take the day off, though that was arranged just this week. I have several options, most of which involve being by myself as everyone i know is working that day.

It's not the end of the world. just a frustration when i realise i blew it on something i actually wanted. (No one to blame but me, and feeling sorry for myself isn't going to help very much.) So... now i have to think of something to do instead.

I also can't get myself what i wanted for my birthday, which was an easel, because i don't have a place to put it yet (let alone money for it) and i promised myself that this was the only condition under which i could have it (trying to break my habit of collecting stuff i have no room for!) I see no reason to make an exception just because it's a birthday.

It's been a very, very long week.

Maybe i will get myself a bottle of vodka and a straw. (mostly kidding.)

Or a trip away alone. (partly kidding- health isn't up to it.)

What i will probably get: glasses (in September, i hope?) to pay my electric bill, my license renewed (if i don't forget again, so i'd better remember), a new tear drainage duct implant in my left eye, and hopefully some more idea of what's going on with my health, and a day of quiet time alone.

Birthdays depress me anyway. I've had a bad history with them, except for a few shining ones. And i miss my former best friend, because we always spent our birthdays together.

  • I've never understood why they use your birthday as your renewal date, it's like ruining everyones bdays in one fell swoop.

Sure it's conventient and spreads the load but why not make it say 2 months before your bday? or shift it so the density of renewals is in the winter when people maybe don't mind the ordeal as much since they aren't being kept from the nice outdoors.
    • Is there a reason why you can't renew in advance in Mass?

Or why not renew online [mass.gov]?

      • Oh it's not about ease of renewing just the general sentiment of having to take care of such things around what is supposed to be your day.

And I'm in Dallas, TX now after having been in Atlanta two years ;)

In atlanta I think they only just started renewals where you didn't have to go to the DMV. Very progressive.
  • Viz, crash someone else's party at random about two thirds of the way through the bottle. Dont' worry if your fractions get mussed up after half, because if they are that means it's probably about time to force your personality on a bunch of random strangers. Embarassment is only temporary!

You said you wanted ideas, but you didn't lay out a quality baseline, though i think it does satisfy criteria a, b.1, and c. As for b.2 - why worry about how much energy a bunch of strangers have to expend?
  • Even if you do nothing outside of your apartment- dress in your most outrageous dragon-wear.
  • 1.) I don't think I could forget your birthday if I tried.

August and September are the birthday months when EVERYBODY I know has a birthday. I've gotten two doctor's appointments on your birthday (got the third this year). The first birthday party I ever threw was one of yours. And I'm sure there's plenty of other reasons.

2.) I am always only too happy to help with anything involving your birthday.

You're one of a handful of people I would literally throw food together for at the drop of a hat (lots of pr
    • i wasn't fishing for trinkets, i swear!

      er... cake? you gots cake???

yeah, that one was one of the best birthdays i EVER had.

      You roxors.

I think... i think i might plead with you for some food. THe local small party idea seems like an alternative to celebrating alone by myself.

i don't know when i'm going to go get my license done but it needs to be soon. *sigh*

you'll see the pic; i'll have to have it redone as i cut my hair all off.

Invite a few near (geographically) and dear (I would start with blinder and pancho) friends for a simple pot luck. You make one dish, each of the others make a dragon-safe dish and gather together at an abode of your choosing. (or one that's offered for the occasion, if not your own)

    Wear lots of pretty spark

    • i'm going to have to agree *completely* with teh kitten here.

and with pancho. we haven't forgotten.

there will be cake baking, there will be (minor) trinketing. there had better be tiara-ing... hey, i wore a crown!

      we likes our dragonses!
  • but i have no gas money either... boston is um.. 1400 miles away if i drive via the michegan bridge. 1400 miles is about $100 worth in gas (for my car) at today's prices.. one way ugh. cars suck.

i have $30 to my name right now so sorry... but realistically, anything i could do in person that i can't do online might not be helpful, considering..

we could use something like skype to chat via voice ^_- just about as good and free! and i'm sure most of your friends could be bothered to download an online voice
    • i think the point of the JE was that she had a whole list of people she wanted to see and spend time with on her birthday... but because of the late date, will not have the opportunity to fully realize that.

so... maybe next year will be a better time to do a "meet sol on her birthday slashdot meetup" thing. we'll just have to wait and remind her... well before her birthday.

just lots going on this year, lots of changes in her life that just made things difficult for her.
      • well by next year i should be able to have money to make a trip up there, maybe ^^; and meet eeeeeeeeveryone and dont talk to me like i don't know what's going on dude. i became a friend of sol right in the midst of that, but um the way i was acting/journaling lately caused a few people to unfreind me. keep in mind this was my SECOND slashdot account, my first one was signed up for when i was at university in 96 and i forgot the login/pass for it.. --; mainly because i left slashdot when it got sickenin
  • KIDDING!

Sadly I too will not be able to attend the pahty, but let me send bday greetings and virtual cranes!
  • I know what you mean. I forgot my own birthday this year, NOT something I'm inclined to do since I've had more birthdays to practice on than you have. So I'm not a reliable source of birthday plans.

But may I suggest at least something involving chocolate and maybe go go boots?? Your choice if others are involved.

My state decided to cut down on the long lines at the DMV by having our licenses be good for TEN years. That makes it more convenient, all right, but who is gonna look anything like their driver's l
  • I don't ever really advertise my birthday, so I just randomly pick a week(end?) and celebrate my birthday. When people ask me how old I am, I say "a day older than yesterday" unless I'm in a bar with a Burgerking Crown on, in which case, I'm 21.

Why should you be confined to celebrating the day of your birth in 365.24 day cycles? Celebrate every 300 days just to f--k with people. Celebrate ever 600 days to make yourself seem artificially young. There are all kinds of options.

I myself was born during a St
  • But another idea might be to go follow it up with live theater. Oh right - I meant go see live theater. ;-) Generally, that is a rare thing, and can sometimes be done without much hassle. (Of course, I live in a small town, where it is rare. If you went just last week, then nevermind.)

Anyway, for me it has always been a memorable experience. :-)

Hmmm... looks like you'd have to plan a trip to New York City to Spamalot though. Too much work methinks.
