Journal Shadow Wrought's Journal: You have until 1300 PST... 13

I just finished James Blish's A Case for Concious and I highly recommend it. It is about a Jesuit's struggle with an intelligent race on the planet Lithia. Its a fast read, with really imaginative imagery, and it opens up many a question.

So, since I am returning it to the library this afternoon, if anyone has any recommendations on books (SciFi and/or Fantasy preferred, but not essential) by all means shout it out;-) I will be limited by what the library has, but it is the Central Portland Library, so in addiiton to be very cool, they have a good collection as well;-)

***Update***

I went ahead with RailGunner's suggestion of CS Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet. After I finish the trilogy, I'll give the Geroge R. R. Martin series a spin. Thanks all for the recommends!

  • might be too close to what you just read, but you might enjoy "The Sparrow" and "Children of God" by Mary Doria Russell , if you haven't read them allready. I really was drawn into both. Sparrow is first, children is the sequel.
    • Iac tually got the recommend for Case of Conscious after having recommend The Sparrow to someone else;-) I have not read Children of God yet, but will probably read it a little later.

I second the Children of God recommendation (especially if you liked the first one). I will add the one you mentioned to me ever growing "check these out" list :-)
      • Along those same lines, I'd have to endorse "Out of the Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis.
      • yipper- if you liked sparrow you'll like children. i read one right after the other. it was a bit intense but i really enjoyed it.
  • George R. R. Martin? [georgerrmartin.com]
Someone years ago on /. suggested it to me, after I said I was burned out on silly sword and sorcery books.
I was pleased to discover he sets the bar very high. There's blood and poverty and some characters you care about will die, often horribly. But not everyone you care about dies... hopefully.
    • I have not read him yet, but his books are all checked out (likely a good sign, no?) so he'll be added to the list.
      • Yes. I'm only recommending this series, though. I disliked some of his earlier books, so I was a bit wary to try him again :)
        • Since it was just released, I actually got carried away with the latest in the series and forgot to reply to SW's comment in my journal regarding ASoFaI.

I also have to highly recommend this series. It isn't a typical fantasy...as was mentioned, it's brutally violent, and is sure to include several tidbits of taboo subject matter. Magic, while existant, is very limited so there are very few situations where people have magical "get out of jail free" cards. Conspiracy and backstabbing abounds. Overall, th
          • mini spoiler for those not yet up on the series -------

I hope it's not going to be Bran vs. Tommen. I mean, I haven't read the latest, but I don't think Tommen's at fault for anything, yet. Tommen may get killed off in this new book, too, and I'd be sad. But I will stop reading the series if Bran dies.

Have you noticed how adult the kids are? It's scary to think on how that probably relates closely to real Anglo-Saxon history, where kids were little adults, and faced some of the challenges they do in the ser
            • But I will stop reading the series if Bran dies.

A dangerous statement to make considering the last few pages of book 3. ;) I can't picture Cersei (or the rest of the Lannisters), Dany, Stannis and the Starks throwing down arms. At least two of those are likable, which leads to the realization that more characters the reader has become attached to will meet their ends.

That's another thing about GRRM that I like...no black and white. You read about the vile deeds of Jaime Lannister at one point throu

I don't recall the last pages. It's been months. Judging from the title of book 4, there's going to be plenty of death in that one to go around. Book 5 will be fighting off the dragon lady :) But the 6th one will be North vs. South. I expect Bran's ability to float around outside his body, and talk to that weird crow, will be needed then.

Anyway, book 4 is out already. I'm waiting until the paperback, or as long as I can stand it.
