walterbyrd writes: Microsoft Corp. is currently sitting on almost $29.6 billion it would owe in U.S. taxes if it repatriated the $92.9 billion of earnings it is keeping offshore, according to disclosures in the company’s most recent annual filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The amount of money that Microsoft is keeping offshore represents a significant spike from prior years, and the levies the company would owe amount to almost the entire two-year operating budget of the company’s home state of Washington.

My answer was going to be "Ham Radio License + HSMM-Mesh" That is exactly what they should experiment with. hsmm-mesh.org has the details, uses Linksys WRT-54x's, and development is being done on Ubuquity's Bullets. Austin, TX hosts most of the hsmm-mesh activity, and there are plenty of other organizations in the US (and around the world).

I have 2 that are headed to the boonies in NY at the end of the month for possible RACES/ARES use. I've been away from the area for over a year, and have a lot to share with the local Amateur Radio Clubs.

Ask the French how well they cooled their reactors during the last heat wave. Then ask the folks in Georgia, Arizona, and southern California where they'll get the water to cool their share of the 45 new reactors. North Dakota should be cold enough, right?

Put them all on the hurricane prone and tsunami-expecting Atlantic or Gulf coast? The scenic Pacific coast? Got a river in your backyard? Good thing all that waste heat dumped into the oceans isn't considered "global warming". Just let the Gulf Stream carry all the waste heat north to help melt Greenland's glaciers.

How much gas/diesel would be needed to build 45 plants? How much new power distribution infrastructure will be needed to carry the power from 45 suitable locations to power hungry consumers? Fourty-five new terrorist destinations?

I'm more against monopolies and putting one's eggs in one basket than I am against nuclear power plants. Decentralized and diversified power production is my choice, perhaps through a "third industrial revolution". When will we all take personal responsibility for the resources we use?

I expect more questions than answers in the short term.

crisco writes "NASA's renewed interest in lunar exploration and 'in situ resource utilization,' or ISRU, is driving the need for tons of carefully faked lunar dust and sand for testing purposes: 'We don't have enough real moondust to go around,' says Larry Taylor, director of Planetary Geosciences Institute at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. To run all the tests, "we need to make a well-qualified lunar simulant.' And not just a few bags will do. 'We need tons of it, mainly for working on technologies for diggers and wheels and machinery on the surface,' adds David S. McKay, chief scientist for astrobiology at the Johnson Space Center (JSC)."
