Dunno about uk politics, but in the US, the executive and legislative branches have significant levers if they think mass public safety is at risk. I imagine UK has similar powers in times of crisis. It also associates broadcom with a food panic, which is just generally bad PR next time companies are considering their VM plans.

As you point out, one of the previous best reasons to use Firefox was good ad blocking support. But with the EULA change, shameless simping for Google and even ads being thrust onto the start page, Mozilla has made it clear this is not the best choice for ad haters or privacy conscious people. At the point you have to start digging through settings to find all the ad check boxes to turn off, it's just easier to use something else. That crowd has gone to Librewolf or Brave or whatever, and rightly so -- Firefox isn't the right choice anymore.

The whole bank app problem would be moot if more banks had check upload on their website. For whatever reason it's often mobile app only. Last time I opened an account, they outright lied that they had web check upload. I don't want a bank app, I just want the check upload feature. I think they restrict it so as to not cannibalize their remote deposit capture subscriptions.

Didn't happen by chance, either. If you don't believe me, look up what's happening with age verification laws. Data brokers like Equifax (under the guise of the AV lobby) are lobbying for ID verification on VPN services. The current privacy hellscape is engineered.

It's a solution to a self-created problem. When I traveled abroad earlier this year, the only difficult customs process was coming back in the US. Going to any other country was easy, so easy one of the countries didn't even ask me any questions, just waved me in. Don't buy into the idea you need to give the US government so much information as a US citizen to have easy access to your own country.

Its killing the porn sites though. A major one reported that adding mandatory age verification reduced traffic by 90%. Some people use VPN, most people just go elsewhere. The whole point of the legislation is to harm adult sites. And unfortunately legislators worldwide don't care how unpopular it is.
