Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has finally realized that the survival of his government, indeed, the survival of Iraq as a nation, depends upon stopping the tit-for-tat butchery from breaking out into a full-scale civil war. He offered a new "security plan" a few days ago that was praised and widely accepted by all parties... and this is the first bit of "earnest money" in that plan:

Can't broadcast/publish good news from Iraq. How would that look? Would completely ruin our entire narrative - you know that oil-bushitler-haliburton-imperialism-quagmire-desc ent into civil war-stoking of terrorism-fiasco thing! Can't have that. Obviously.

You think they should start reporting good news? Why? The death rate due to violence there continues to increase, with the controversial The Lancet statistics which Bush recently called "flawed" actually less than the most recent US DoD death rate estimates. [wikipedia.org] Emphasis on good news would be absurd propaganda, and impossible anyway since the reporters are also increasingly subject to violence, and can't get out and report these days.
