Journal Red Warrior's Journal: Good times, bad times, you know I've had them all 28

Good:
  • My branch transfer was finally approved! Actually happened on the 22nd, but I only found out yesterday. I am FINALLY officially an Armor officer.
  • It looks like I have escaped the hell assignment I mentioned in my last JE. Oh, for the military types, did I mention that I also had, AS AN ADDITIONAL DU TY, the job of S-4. In an Ad Hoc task force? It now appears that I am to be a liason to my BDE's higher. Not the best job, but a light year's improvement.
  • For THIS mortar attack, I have the good fortune to be inside a hardened building with internet connectivity ;->

BAD:

  • For this internet session, I have the bad fortune of being under mortar attack.
  • Yesterday I didn't get on the net much because of 5+ hours of intermittent shelling.
  • Mohammed got lucky. 3 servicemembers from this area are dead as of last night. Makes the internet thing seem kinda petty.

Oh, and thanks to NCC, my least favorate troll should be absent from this JE. To forstall any confusion, that's a good thing. First person, including the goatse guy to make me ill.

Stay safe. I'm praying for you, and I'll be praying for the families of the three as well.

    • Ever since you shipped out, I've become obsessed with all the news clips about Iraq on TV. I'm sure my wife thinks I'm strange...

There's plenty of worse stuff on TV with which to be obsessed. I'm beginning to think my sister might've gotten a little bit lucky to have gotten sent over to Iraq when she did (August to November, as a Predator maintenance officer), as things are getting a bit dicey right now.

      • I'm thinking that the brass hats need to either sh*t or get off the pot. Half-measures are only going to get more GIs killed, and waiting much longer will only give the Bad Guys more time to dig in and will complicate arranging all of their come-to-Jesus meetings.

Just for the record, I would never say such a thing in a [cough]public[cough] forum. However, I support your right to say it...

Ah, gotta love the Air Force. Odds are, she might have been where I am.

  • First, is it "hell left and right, every square inch of the country in termoil" like they make it look on the news here?

Second, how did you get rid of your troll?

I went to "friends only" on my journal to get rid of the posers.
    • 1. No. There is MUCH MORE insurgent activity than there was. It is bad, worse than it's been in a while. I don't expect it to last long. I know more, but that's all I'll say about that. The press, as you know, mostly takes the easy story and copies each other. It does suck right now, though.

      2. I made the JE "No Foes". As he's my only foe... I could have done the "Friends Only", but I don't mind people who disagree with me, or people who have found my journal from commenting. I've got a lot of people in my f

      • I don't mind when people disagree with me either. Many of my foes foed me first and some became foes for the same reason our common foe became one of mine too. Not necessarily for what they have said to me, but certainly for what they have said somewhere. A great lack of civility is a biggie for me.

It is the appearance of total strangers voicing the exact same words as some who are already foed that can be annoying. Gives the appearance that some pests must insist on being pests to the extent of having

The chutzpah. This from the guy that regularly calls people that disagree with him "fags" and entire political party "Commies." But I guess that's all in good fun, eh?

RW - take my advice and go with friends-of-friends. Otherwise your foe will just make a quick troll account and polute your journal with their filth. At least, that's what has been my experience, anyway [slashdot.org].
        • See? I just got trolled in your journal by someone I can generally ignore by adjusting the settings. It sounds like that troll of yours and ignoring/blocking just creates wilder posts.
      • Well, I guess that should work okay for you. Using Friends and Friends of Friends will still let your pest in, since you share several friends. [slashdot.org]
  • For an active member of the United States armed forces that is currently assigned duties within a warzone you sure do spend a lot of time online. You would think that you guys would be so busy that participating in an online discussion forum would be impossible. You up for a little Battle Field Vietnam action later? Our squad could use a real-deal warrior. :)

In any event, good luck soilder.

    • "war zone" is subject to interpretation. (yes, I know that's what they call it) We are really doing counterinsurgency. There are a lot of us, doing a lot of things. Some grunts on the ground stuff, some office work. Most importantly, I'm a staff weenie. Check the times that I post the most. I'm PST +11, or EST +8. I don't need a lot of sleep, and the internet cafe(s!) are open 24/7. It's also one of the ways that I decompress (shrink-speak for blow off stress)

  • Disagree or not, it pretty much ain't cool to troll somebody getting shelled one hour out of every four. Sounds pretty pussy to me.

I'll wait until you are stateside to do that.

    Watch yer ass dude.
    • That does seem exceptionally weak. Like one of those things that, no matter how you try to pull it off, makes the person look petty. Oh well, guess we can't expect everybody to be an adult. :/
  • Still planning on taking me up on the webhosting offer? :-)

Glad to see you're still alive, keep it that way!
    • Indeed I am! :-)

The last week or two (I forget, and don't have my paper journal in front of me...how strange is that?) have been somewhat hectic. Especially with all the job changes. Now that it appears that I finally have a set job, and a pretty easy one (if with long hours) at that, I just need to rebuild my laptop, and download/organize/screen my photos.

It is my goal to leave Iraq with all the bits I came with.

      • "... I finally have a set job, and a pretty easy one ..."

I'll take that with a grain of sand since it seems you've stepped out of any semblance of your job's comfort zone some miles back.
        • See a JE in the next few days...

working on how to describe w/o giving away "secret ninja squirrel" stuff. Sweet, though.

          • I'll keep an eye for it. Meanwhile please mind your bits. I'd like to correct one thing I said though.

You're way outside what I'd perceive as a comfort zone. I imagine yours is expanding and keeping pace, like the envelope of a supersonic.
  • CDDB rocks. It also helps when I use the faster CD drive in my system to rip your stuff. I can hardly keep up with how fast it works now. Three to 5 minutes per CD now. Better than the 10 to 15 that the first one was.

    I'm back, just finished one.

Hey, the weather here has been real nice lately. WTF are you doing in Iraq missing it? Unfortunatly that means that I probably have to mow the lawn tomorrow. Oh, well. Shit happens. What has the weather been like over there? Hot? Cold? Probably both as it is th
    • You know what's sad? I just found out last night that today is Easter, and just remembered that that means I'm missing norwescon...
      • I'm' here and missing norwescon. Too broke to go. Which isn't too bad (the not going that is). It's usually the same thing every single year. Taking a year or two off helps make things "fresh" again.

Unless you are looking to get laid, then now is always a good time to go.
      • I am in my office too, eyeball deap in the world of 272s and 1352s (check with your local staff Aviator if you REALLY want to know about those forms). Wasn't paying attention to the holliday either really. Was invited to Church today by a girl I just started seeing, the one who brought me inside the big Masonic Temple in Alexandria, VA, but I had stuff to do here. My "sunrise service" consisted of chatting a little online then coming to the office. Crappy WX too. I can see the NRO building through the
  • Forgive my ignorance on this matter, but is there any way to figure out where the attacks are coming from and sending out someone to hit them back?
    • Yes. Four main ways
      1. "I fsking saw it come from over there"
      2. Crater analysis. The craters left from impact form distinctive patterns. They are wider perpendicular to the direction of flight, and they toss up a furrow of dirt, showning direction of impact/travel.
      3. Radar. Tracks the flight of rounds.

Imagery, of various sorts. Satallite, secret squirrel stuff..

The problems are twofold. Mohammed is basically doing drive-bys. He lobs one or two rounds in the general direction, and then runs like hell. Second, we try

      • Saw this today, thought you'd be interested:

British commanders condemn US military tactics [theage.com.au]
"When US troops are attacked with mortars in Baghdad, they use mortar-locating radar to find the firing point and then attack the general area with artillery, even though the area they are attacking may be in the middle of a densely populated residential area.

"They may well kill the terrorists in the barrage, but they will also kill and maim innocent civilians. That has been their response on a number of occasio

        • It's not what we do. It is what I would do, however. Prolly why I'm not in charge...

Moreover, that isn't shoot first & ask questions latter. If we have a radar ack, we got the question answered.

  • How are you guys doing on hot sauce?

Just wondering because I am making some and intend to ship you a bunch of it. Habenaro. Will send some Tabasco too, of course.

Still getting the care package together and need to get a DVD burner for the multi-media all-girl care package from Bootieville too :)

How about Zippos? Are they well stocked?
