Certainly GMOs should be labeled as such so that consumers can make an informed choice and pressing governments to introduce such legislation should be encouraged. However, in Belgium, EU laws clearly state that products which contain GMOs must be labelled as such. In addition genetically modified crops must be handled in such a way that 'normal' crops are not affected. So in this case it would seem that these activists were not so much concerned with regulation but rather with the very existence of these GMO crops. http://www.gmo-compass.org/eng/regulation/regulatory_process/156.european_regulatory_system_genetic_engineering.html

It's unlikely that these bacteria will be used for reducing greenhouse gas. Even if they could be adapted to live under more 'friendly' conditions they'll metabolise methane into... carbon dioxide. That doesn't really solve the problem. On the other hand, methane is notoriously difficult to oxidise partially, so it might be interesting to see if and how this bacteria accomplishes this.

Comment Re:Leftism! (Score 1) 650

You assume that 'Leftism' means centralized goverment. Where I live, in Holland, the new left wing parties (who, btw, have denounced the crimes commited by the Stalinists and other authoritarian communists) are actually supporting decentralized democracy more than some right wing parties - the same goes for personal freedom, so I really think you should take your "so typical of Leftists and Christians to try and tell other people how to think" (also because it is, of course, perfectly normal to try and convince people that they're doing something wrong when you think they are). Also, it shows that you don't know what you're talking about. Marx's vision of true communism was one without a state, in the end - his "fifth thesis", an anarchist paradise so to speak. Most other socialist thinkers (say, Proudhon) agreed that that was the way to go. Please take your "socialism==authoritarian" statements back. Personally, I think liberals are very authoritarian by letting the free market force people into terrible situations, but I suppose oppression only comes from the Big Evil Goverment that can't do any good in the typical Slashdot opinion.
