I'd like to point out that when companies merge, the first thing that happens is all the dead weight gets cut. Usually all a merger does is get a company with lots of cash a name brand it needed, or a small set of people with skills it deemed desirable. Everything else is just chaff that it had to take with what it really wanted. Once the deal is done, you usually start seeing reductions all over. While this is done in the corporate world, you want our governments that kick out all the citizens it decides it doesn't really want or need? And go work for a small company, versus a very large one. Tell me after you've spent a year at each one witch is more efficient.

Submission + - Adobe may launch Office rival 1

Ulysees writes: Adobe may launch its own office-application suite, taking it into direct competition with Microsoft.

In an interview, Mike Downey, group manager for platform evangelism at Adobe, said that, although he could not reveal any plans at the moment, the possibility should not be dismissed.

"Though we have not yet announced any intentions to move into the office productivity-software market, considering that we have built this platform that makes it easy to build rich applications that run on both the desktop and the browser, I certainly wouldn't rule anything like that out," Downey told Wired.com.

Submission + - Netflix drops e-mail support (nytimes.com)

msblack writes: In a counter culture move against outsourcing and non-interactive customer support, Netflix has forsaken e-mail as a means of customer support. According to the New York Times article, Netflix set up the call center in Portland OR, shunning other popular US call center cities or off-shoring. "It's very interesting and counter to everything anybody else is doing," said Tom Adams, the president of Adams Media Research, a market research firm in Carmel, Calif. "Everyone else is making it almost impossible to find a human."
