I think we can all agree the political discourse is stifled on platforms like twitter.
Here is the actual argument for changing section 230.

'
Freedom of expression defends all our other freedoms. Only in a society that protects free expression can citizens criticize their leaders without fear, check their excesses, and expose their abuses. As Ben Franklin stated, “[w]hoever would overthrow the Liberty of a Nation, must begin by subduing the Freeness of Speech.”9 However, social media and its growing dominance present troubling questions on how to preserve First Amendment ideals and promote diversity of voices in modern communications technology. Social media’s power stems in part from the legal immunities granted by the Communications Decency Act of 1996

. It is vital to remember, however, that Congress in section 230 also had the express purpose of ensuring that the “Internet and other [internet platforms] offer a forum for a true diversity of political discourse, unique opportunities for cultural development, and myriad avenues for intellectual activity.”14

Times have changed, and the liability rules appropriate in 1996 may no longer further Congress’s purpose that section 230 further a “true diversity of political discourse.” A handful of large social media platforms delivering varied types of content over high-speed internet have replaced the sprawling world of dial-up Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and countless bulletin boards hosting static postings. Further, with artificial intelligence and automated methods of textual analysis to flag harmful content now available, unlike at the time of Stratton Oakmont, Inc., platforms no longer need to manually review each individual post but can review, at much lower cost, millions of posts.15 Thus, the fundamental assumptions driving early section 230 interpretation are antiquated and lack force, thus necessitating a recalibration of section 230 protections to accommodate modern platforms and technologies

III. The Commission Should Act to Protect Free Speech Online

Quite a bit of projection to say that this change is to stifle free speech online, when free speech online is already being stifled, and the request intends to restore diversity of political opinion.

That is only really true for primary drives. Many people have been buying primary drives which are significantly larger than they need because prices are so low. Now this will push people who are on the fence about which way to go to buy SSDs which are more appropriately sized for a primary drive, but for anyone who wants storage space, the price per GB still makes hard drives the better buy.

I saw the aftermath myself on my way home from work yesterday. At the time I drove past, all that was left was the Google car. The front end was not as you suggest barely touched, it was actually pretty messed up. The reason the cop was at the scene was that the accident occurred in the left lane, and at least the Google car if not the other cars stayed in the lane. The cop car was behind the Google car with it's lights on as a safety precaution. The Google car was waiting for a specialty tow truck.

Ask Slashdot: How Do You Choose a Windows Laptop? 898

jfruhlinger writes "I'm a Mac guy. When our 2004-era Windows XP laptop, which was used primarily by my wife, died last summer, I got myself a new MacBook Pro and she inherited my still serviceable 2008 MacBook. But after about six months, she hasn't gotten used to it, and wants a Windows machine. I don't have an ideological problem with this — it'd be her computer, and we've got a bit of money stashed away to pay for it. But trying to pick one out is my job, and I find the the whole process bewildering. Apple's product differentiation is great at defeating the paradox of choice — you have a few base models, the difference between which is quite obvious, and you can customize each. The Windows world seems totally different. Even once I've settled on a vendor for a Windows laptop (something I haven't done yet), each seems to have a bewildering array of product lines with similar specs. Often models that you find in electronics or office supply stores that seem promising in terms of form factor are exclusive to those stores and can't be found online. Obviously people do navigate this process, but I'm just feeling out of my depth. How would Slashdotters go about picking a solid, basic laptop for Web surfing and document editing that won't be obsolete in two years?"

They werent designed for secure erasure. The article says that varying methods of erasing the drives such as DoD 8 pass still leaves atleast 1% of data that can be recovered.

Presumably this is because of the optimization techniques that SSD's use to achieve high performance and increase lifespans. One of these measures is having 64GB of flash on a 60GB SSD, leaving extra flash to act as for intesive operation and wear leveling. Since the disks werent designed for secure erasure, no method erases the extra space, and what conventional program do is just trigger the controller to sometime overwrite some of the extra flash space.

This isnt endemic to SSD technology, just the way the controllers are implemented. At some point controller will probably support this secure erase of all flash.

TL; DR : new tech doesnt have all the features, can recover atleast 1% of your data until better tech comes out

Gotta disagree with the example though. You must have had some bad experience with focusable lasers or a laser that was poorly manufactured. Green laser >20mw are fairly easy to make out on a while reflective surface flying through the night, and they at most cover the section of the tail. You can even see the dispersion of the laser beam as it travels if the laser is powerful and the night is really dark.
