Comment This is an undisciplined decision (Score 1) 61

OpenAI is in a fierce competitive battle. Do the executives there really think greenlighting a project to build a better revision control system (RCS) will really help their battle with Gemini and Anthropic? git is a commodity RCS in 2026. It is undisciplined to think building a slightly better RCS will move the needle they need to move.

Comment A hotter job market would end this RTO push (Score 1) 95

The Return To Office (RTO) mandates are boosted by the tech job market cooling off. Workers who do not want to RTO will head into the office because it is challenging to find an alternative right now. If the tech job market heats up again (ala 2010-2022) then workers will have an easy choice to work remote or not, based on their preference. That is when the RTO companies will suffer, and maybe fail altogether, because their best people will run for the doors.

bikes are viewed as a menace because so many cyclists are shitheads and blow through red lights and stop signs, ride on sidewalks endangering pedestrians, and change lanes without signalling (how many even know their hand signals? not even 1 in 10 actually signals while cars almost always do except BMW I have seen no evidence that the OEM signals work on those cars)

This projection argues that the price to pay in the AI innovation game is at least $100 billion. This means the war will be between a handful of mega-corps rather than innovative startups. Has any other disruptive tech cycle in history be so exclusively top heavy? This is why I am convinced someone, a startup, will burst the bubble from the low end.

I've always been able to work around this inconvenience. Netflix does this because they were losing business to people sharing their password with their non-paying friends. How would you handle the same situation if you were running Netflix?

generative AI is fundamentally just predicting the most likely next token (word-ish) based on the prior, it's autocorrect on crystal meth.

it has no comprehension of anything it says or does, it just generates valid text based on the analysis of immense amounts of previously harvested text.

hallucinated citations are because AI does know what a valid citation should look like and where to expect to find one, so it puts one where you should find one, and it makes one that looks like it has seen before so the formatting and naming should sound plausible
